East Lansing Mich Dec 24 An increase of 50.9 bushels per acre was obtained by the Michigan State College this year through the use of fertilizer in growing potatoes. The tests, conducted on farms across the state, showed returns from the crop were $18 an acre higher on fertilized plots. Close planting in rows also boosted yields per acre.
Chicago December 24 Schuman and Weiner carlot distributors at 216 South Water Market hire W V 8 Connor to run the Chicago office during Meyer Schuman’s El Centro lettuce assignment. Connor, former American Fruit Growers Inc manager of the carrot office and Fry Brokerage alum, brings five years local market experience. Demosthenes Booth, president of Booth Produce, won 1290.30 dollars in a circuit court jury verdict against Hewitt Grocery for breach of contract on two carloads of potatoes. Booth testified Hewitt failed to provide prompt shipment, forcing him to buy on the open market and sue for price differences.
Moorhead Minn December 23 The spring potato movement from the Red River Valley is expected to begin about the first of the year or shortly after said Frank Kuhlmeyer A few carloads of potatoes seed and table stock are being shipped daily but the heavy movement will not start for about two weeks About 2000 car loads remain in the valley for shipment Many farmers hold stock to secure better prices next spring Early Ohios and Cobblers were worth 1 to 125 a bushel while white stock was quoted around 30c
Michigan bean growers suffered heavy losses as field rot ruined about one fourth of the meat crop and a fifth of the harvested beans were unsalable. State estimates show 174,000 acres, or 24 percent, unharvested with 5,299,000 bushels marketable, leaving only 4,300,000 bushels usable after pickage.
Chicago dispatch reports J H Weishaar and Co of 12 South Water Market did not go out of business. The firm gathered creditors for an extension of credit, handed two trucks to the Chicago Produce Trade and Credit Association for sale, and settled the remaining debt with notes.
Moorhead Minn Dec 23 Frank Kuhlmeyer of the Moorhead branch of Leonard Crosset and Riley left Tuesday for Cincinnati to spend the Christmas holidays with his mother. Mrs Kuhlmeyer has been in Cincinnati for the past week.
Holiday fruit and vegetable trade in Grand Rapids broke records with hot house lettuce leading the surge. wholesalers report strong gift purchases by religious organizations aiding charitable distributions, while oranges grapefruit grapes and apples stayed in steady supply and prices.
Allied interests urged banning truck era and dealers from Grand Rapids municipal markets. Verne Branch of Detroit markets testified that Detroit bars truckers to protect nearby growers and local dealers. He noted Detroit swamps with produce and described market development favoring producers and quick outlets for large quantities.
Zero weather in Grand Rapids and the Great Lakes region caused a temporary shortage of green stuff as cold wave disrupted local and Chicago shipments. Frost damage complaints spread to shippers as freezing temperatures restrained greenhouse product movement and delayed consignments in the week ending December 24.

Winesaps in storage are being packed for market as improved apple demand prompts last shipments.
The Grand Rapids produce market district shifts location with Besteman and DeMeester leaving downtown for a new warehouse at 316 Ellsworth Avenue. Other wholesale houses, including Market Produce Company and Van Eerden Produce Company, have bought Ellsworth sites and plan relocation when leases end. Additional firms such as M. J. Dark & Sons Ellis Brothers David Cavern & Co and Abe Schefman & Co own sites on Ellsworth Avenue.
Albert F. Eisner of Champaign Illinois died at Champaign Country Club on Wednesday night while pulling on overshoes after dinner. He served as president of Eisner Grocery Company and was a major stockholder in Miller Grocery Company. His estate totals several hundred thousand dollars and his will will be probated in Urbana on Monday.
Michigan bean movement this fall and winter is about 60 percent lighter than a year ago according to Western Michigan Bean Association officials. Elevators are stocked, but remaining merchantable stocks are not much larger than last year due to large acreage abandoned. The Michigan Bean Jobbers Association and allied interests aim to estimate state stock available for shipment. Holidays and inventory time slow demand, easing quotations. White pea beans sold at about 5.50 per cent. Wholesale grocers buy on a hand to mouth basis awaiting inventories. Reports of unemployment in large centers reach the bean trade, with expectation of renewed strength if labor remains easy. Beans move best when the labor market is slack.
Salt Lake City lawmaker plan would require local co operative marketing associations to be audited by the state auditor. Harden Bennion Utah Commissioner of Agriculture also seeks to bar sale of wormy or diseased fruit unless properly labeled as the 1927 legislature opens in January.
