A nostalgic verse invites gentlemen to share kindly cheer and mirth this Christmastide. It calls old friends to renew affection, invite no strangers, and celebrate the birthday of the kindly King with songs and goodwill.
In New Orleans the Banana Distributing Company announces it will discontinue effective January 1. The Cayamel Fruit Company and the Standard Fruit Steamship Company will market their own fruit, while the Southern Banana Corporation of Galveston joins the new arrangements. Ernest Schultz leads Cayamel sales. John Vaccaro runs Standard marketing and sales. J J Carey returns as sales manager. Most officials and staff will move to the new firms.
Minneapolis Minn December 21 The Minnesota Potato Growers and Shippers Association formed as a voluntary group of state growers and shippers to advance the potato industry. The 400 attendees at the Nicollet Hotel meeting pledged cooperation with the national organization and committees remained in session late Wednesday night.
Detroit December 21 a Detroit bank returned a $25 check signed by Earl Carr as no funds. Carr linked to Lovell H Turnbull Co and claimed to have worked for a Chicago firm. He traveled Michigan fruit belt with blank checks then altered to a bank in Anna Illinois, which reported no account.
An Associated Press dispatch from Bogota Colombia reports the DADRA growing regions settled the recent banana strike. Plantations resume cutting and bananas are transported by trains guarded by troops. The death of Colombian Communist leader Alberto Castrillon, after a clash between troops and strikers in Seville, was announced today. Castrillon had attended the Moscow Communist conference.
EB L Roberts reports the National League of Commission Merchants will meet in Atlanta January 8 to 11 with expected largest attendance. Topics include transportation and refrigeration legislation affecting perishables, plus talks by Thorpe French and Rasmussen. Georgia Governor Hardman and Atlanta Mayor Ragsdale to welcome. officers listed. continuation noted on Page 114.
Washington reports Treasury officials acknowledge growth of unfermented grape juice sellers as lawful while warning against direct cellar fermentation supervision. Seymour Lowman notes no method to halt grape juice sales before fermentation and cites dangers of counterfeit champagne in New York venues, including altered wines and cider.
Ottawa hosts the Eastern Canada Fruit and Vegetable Jobbers Association convention January 9 to 11 with speakers including Lord Willingdon and Dr. Motherwell. The cabbage market was quiet this week as pre holiday lull slows activity. Prices hovered around 88 dollars with some dealers quoting 35 dollars a ton f o b Wisconsin while buyers stayed scarce. Local operators expect higher prices after the holiday as Colorado shipments clear and open routes to the West and Southwest.
