The Bureau of Markets announces a comprehensive nationwide food survey through December 31, 1937. Blank reports will be sent to wholesalers retailers restaurants hospitals and public and private institutions handling more than 240 dollars in food.
Jacksonville reports December 9 freeze damage was overrated as shipments rise in several sections. Lakeland Plant City and Indian River move peppers, eggplants, beans, tomatoes, cabbage while Homestead and Sanford sections ship beans and lettuce. Miami area shows light movement of many fruits and vegetables. Florida totals include 50 cars grapefruit and 460 cars oranges in first three days, versus 30 years ago, 90 lettuce cars, 3 celery cars, 3 tomato cars, with some weeks comparable to last year.
An odd reminiscence recalls a meeting in a Blae Gray town with a haughty youth. Eugene B. notes a handshake, a donation of $10, and Civil War memories. The piece shifts to wartime charity urging apples for American soldiers in France via the American Y M C A and Steel Cross.

A Virginia shipper recalls 26c live turkeys and 29 1 dressed turkeys quoted through November, with delayed payments on a single coop and nonpayment on the first shipment. Similar issues were raised with Dougherty Produce, which operates in the same office and sent similar inquiries and wires.
Kansas City December 21. Chicago Dec 21 Potato shippers and ouyers nationwide filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission to raise the minimum weights on carrot shipments of potatoes from Michigan Wisconsin Minnesota North and South Dakota and Iowa to all points east of the Minos Iowa state line The proposed minimums cover October 1 to stiplewune for potatoes and May 1 to September with 10000 pound minimums in bulk or packaged cases The carriers seek a hearing to present reasons why the minimum should not be set as proposed

California Valencia boxes sold around 4.15 to 4.50 for fancy stock, Florida at 4.50, lemons steady with limited demand from 7.7.50 for 200 to 360 count, grapefruit steady with good frost-free stock and some damage from cold. Indian River stock quoted at 3.75 to 4, others 2.25 to 4 by size and quality.
Chicago reports no major change in the union market this week with steady prices. Operators note improved inquiry while trading remains subdued. Reds and yellows from Indiana and Wisconsin sell around 2.25 to 2.20 per cwt at shipping point.

In Houston Texas committees plan events for the Western Fruit Jobbers Association gathering set for January 16. The local chair T A Cargill shrugged off sensational reports about Chicago buyers with ill gotten money and games of chance, saying Houston is ready to welcome the visitors.
Chicago Nee 21 The cabbage market will firm this week and operators report good movement at prices above a week ago. General opinion is for further demand rise after Christmas and prices to seek higher levels. Wisconsin Holland seed sales mostly around 33.37 a ton f o b shipping points, with remote markets booking up to 39 a ton.
Lester Brothers of Newport News Virginia had their license revoked after the Food Administration found wartime conditions led them to speculate and profit on essential items. Special attorney James Ford led the investigation and hearing detailing refusals to accept carloads of onions and potatoes, and shifts in disposition of consignments.
Food Administration and trade representatives in Washington agreed to extend the disposal time for the 1916 17 packed poultry. Broilers get 60 days more, other kinds 20 days, turkeys remain due by January 1. Allocation plans show 20 percent broilers moved in January February March and 40 percent in April.
Chicago December 21 live poultry market held firm under active demand with liberal offerings. Turkeys weakened by midweek while ducks and geese rose, fowls and springs eased slightly. prices ranged from 16 to 28 cents, with good meat turkeys at 26 cents and heavy fowls near 20 cents amid steady overall tone. The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered a 15 percent advance effective December 10 on egg shipments from Tennessee Georgia North Carolina and other Southern states to New York Boston Philadelphia Baltimore and other Eastern markets. The increase applies to both rail and water routes.
