The Bureau of Crop Estimates reports the 17 leading states ship 123 124 cars this season, down from 152 298 cars last season. Growers hold 39 percent and 6.8 percent is lost to rot and freezing. October was 129 466 carloads. by December 15 shipments stood at 73 519, up from 69 769 last year, signaling a shortage of about 20 000 cars before season end. Also, exporters must wire or rope boxed apples for shipment abroad as standard boxes are inadequate.
