North Dakota Seed Commissioner Gillig Dies After Heart Attack
Fargo, N D, Dec 16 E M Gillig Seed Commissioner of North Dakota since 1929 and a leader in the potato industry died Saturday after a heart attack. He was 44. His brother John, 42, died two weeks earlier in St Paul. Survived by widow and three sons Roy Edward Jack, mother Mrs Mary Gillig of Minneapolis, and two sisters Mrs George Hagney and Mrs Herbert Geifer. Funeral held Tuesday at St Mary's Cathedral with Rt Rev William Mulloy.

Early Cabbage Acreage Larger Than Last Year
Washington reports 1939 cabbage plantings totaling 77 300 acres up 12 percent from 69 300 last year and 2 percent above the 1928 37 average. Fall acreage unchanged in some states while California Florida Louisiana and Texas show 19 percent higher plantings than last season. Second early states expect a 3 percent cut from last year’s harvested area. Production in the fall crop declines in North and South Carolina and in the Norfolk Virginia area by about 6 percent. In Florida Hastings McIntosh and Everglades areas see mixed prospects with late January shipments. Texas plantings rise 33 percent to 32 000 acres but won’t match last year’s totals. Continuous drought and rainfall patterns affect other regions.
