After weeks of fruitless talks between union officials and local dealers, a planned labor walkout on Cincinnati's fresh fruit and vegetable market began with most firms unmanned. Five small dealers agreed with the union on wages and hours but rejected a closed shop, leaving police protection and street patrols as the market emptied.
Ea Briggs of the American Fruit and Vegetable Shippers Association says a strong brokers turnout is expected for the 13th annual Brokers Division meeting at the Stevens hotel in Chicago on January 15 1927. The Shippers Association convention runs January 14 15 and 16 with GC T More of St Louis preparing an engaging program.
Washington correspondent Charles O. Gridley of the Denver Post and the forthcoming National Press Club president will address the National League of Wholesale Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Distributors at the Atlanta Biltmore Hotel during the league’s 45th annual meeting. He is unopposed for the NPC presidency in the December 19 vote.

Freight rates on Texas citrus to Illinois Iowa Minnesota Missouri Nebraska North and South Dakota Wisconsin and across the Mississippi to Memphis New Orleans were cut by 8 cents per hundredweight effective December 6. Missouri Pacific Lines official Walter J. Kavanaugh announced the adjustment, noting further reductions at intermediate points in Kansas Arkansas and Louisiana.
The arbitration committee of produce dealers decided local wholesale markets will close from Friday Christmas day through Sunday and for a similar period for the New Year holiday. A small group supplying hotels and others needing produce will be allowed to open to meet those needs.

The California Arizona orange grapefruit agency distribution committee set the Navel orange prorate for the week beginning Sunday. State distribution at 900 cars with 160 destined for the south and 150 to the north. An intrastate prorate was set at 200 cars.
By week’s end consensus favored closing the New York market from Christmas Eve through early Monday morning December 28. Emergency measures would protect boat arrivals and perishables. receivers and jobbers supported the plan. Executives of the National League of Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Distributors and the Fruit Exchange endorsed Saturday closings during Christmas and New Year holidays.
