Chicago December reports a steady potato market but dull trading amid mild weather and ample western stock. Frosted and undergrade stock pressured prices. red and white stock varied by region with most finishes between 1.35 and 1.70 per bushel, receipts fluctuating daily through the week.
Chicago live poultry market remained satisfactory with liberal receipts and steady to firm prices. Freight arrivals were plentiful, springs cut by 4c, but then rose. fowls, ducks, geese and turkeys showed modest gains across several days with prices quoted around 11 to 16 1/2c and per dozen rates ranging from 6 to 20+ dollars depending on item.
Washington December 8 It appears Congress will act quickly to address high food and commodity prices with a plan for investigation. Leading members favor Borland's resolution directing the Federal Trade Commission to probe all aspects of the shortage and rising costs of food supplies.
In Eagle Lake Texas and nearby towns potato acreage is expected to fall by about two thirds next spring. Seed potato prices around 2.45 per bushel risk smaller growers abandoning planting, with prior high costs and a recent Oklahoma crop failure cited as contributing factors.
New York December 8 indictments were handed down against Harlem and Bronx Live Poultry Association directors Harry Baff Louis Werner Max Sokolof Charles Frank Goodman Lewys and Dr Paul A Belson a Jewish social worker. Receipts light but rising. undergrade stock increasing. Packing stock easy and slow to move with prices lower. Continuous dull demand left market generally steady with weaker seconds at 30 to 31c.
