Chicago market notes a limited demand for potatoes this week despite a somewhat firmer basis. Receipts remain under normal with light movement into consumption, as buyers in smaller markets report slow demand and healthier quality stock helps stabilise prices.
A railroad embargo due to congestion in the Pittsburgh area affects freight moving east via Pittsburgh. It covers perishables livestock and government goods originating in Chicago St Louis and points west and destined east of Pittsburgh. Principal lines affected include Pennsylvania and Baltimore and Ohio. others bringing traffic through New York state and Buffalo are not impacted.
Urbana Ohio December 7 Joseph Silvestri a small fruit and vegetable dealer filed bankruptcy early this week. Springfield and Columbus creditors claim more than 1000 dollars. The schedule lists two creditors besides fuel and stamp bills totaling 112.10. Total liabilities 1876.97 assets 788 secured claims 727.87. New York December 7 The New York Mercantile Exchange plans to expand membership to non residents to broaden its reach into butter egg and cheese trades across the East and West. Annual dues for non residents set at 25 with payments due January 1 and July 1. Non residents may trade on the floor and with members but cannot vote in annual elections or hold equity in the exchange.
Jim Neace, once a partner in the Cash Produce Company, is serving one year and one day in Leavenworth for misuse of the mails. Convicted in Fort Worth Federal District Court, Neace argued bankruptcy at arrest to beat two counts while other charges stemmed from revising old company cards to cover fake shipments.
