Chicago December 5 The green vegetable market was quiet and steady after the holiday with moderate supplies and prices. Tomato boxes sold for 26 cents per box, barrels for five to six dollars, and several items including endive cucumbers and radishes showed steady demand with fancy stock fetching higher prices.
Chicago December 5 onion market remained steady with most trades at the prior week’s top prices. Local wholesale activity diverged from eastern quotes though markets elsewhere stayed steady or firm. Car shipments declined to 276 cars from all regions versus 404 the prior week as buyers anticipated mild improvement in carrot demand. Indiana Reds and Yellows quoted at 5.25 per box while California Browns around 4.75.
Chicago dec 5 apple trade shows a slight easing with abundant barreled stock and slow demand. Prices declined 50c to $1 per barrel on common storage stock, especially B grade. Tuesday quotations include Northern Spy 9 to 9.50, Rome Beauties 8.50 to 9, Baldwins 8.50 to 9, Jonathan 9.50 to 10, and No. 2 varieties 4.50 to 5.50. Minneapolis reports record 80c firsts for eggs. butter, poultry, and labor notes follow.
Minnesota potato trade shows a seasonal decline as about one third of the crop remains, half held by growers. Through December 1, 14,962 cars shipped, up 1,300 from last year. last week 162 cars shipped, 40 fewer than prior week. Car shortages and weather slow loadings, but stock remains enough to fill few available cars. Prices steady with round whites at 2.70 to 2.80 per cwt.
