Centralia Illinois reports the peach deal is moving briskly as southern areas near peak by Monday or Tuesday of next week. Picking begins lightly in the central region Monday with small shipments until August 18 to 20. Weather disruptions delayed many orchards but shipments are set to rise as the season progresses.
Wind torn through Centralia Illinois causing extensive damage to trees and fruit including apples and pears. Early observations show more harm to trees than fruit with peaches ripening this week and prices stabilizing as buyers return. Continued reports across the state note damage but no totals yet. stock accumulation from other deals influences prices.
Apple growers in Shenandoah Cumberland area show cautious interest in Nova Scotian reports that Britain may drop the tariff and allow American apples into empire markets. Idaho onions show production near 2400 acres with an expected 2000 cars this year. White Spanish and yellow Spanish varieties dominate with shipments starting late August. Frank B. Arata of the Frank B. Arata Fruit Company and Louis A. Blunck of Nampa suffered injuries when their car overturned near Baker, Oregon, while returning from a Milton-Freewater trip. Blunck was driving to avoid a bicycle. They were rushed to a funeral home, initially feared dead, but survived amid relief from friends and business associates.
A group of Maine youths learning potato farming and other crops toured Shenandoah Valley sights near Staunton Virginia. Members of the Future Farmers of America visited Woodstock for a meeting and toured Natural Bridge Skyline Drive and caverns. They also toured Washington DC on a side trip. Potato Growers Urged to Enter Contest in Traverse City Michigan appeals to Grand Traverse growers to join the Northern Michigan Potato and Apple Show contest to improve quality and yield per acre under project rules.
Colorado’s Elberta crop, largely grown on the western slope, is set to move from Palisade around August 20 and from North Fork around September 5. Officials expect a record quality crop. USDA estimates 1,400,000 bushels, surpassing 1935, with new bearing orchards lifting production.

In Salinas California on August 13 mostly poor quality lettuce remained offered with some stock showing burn and ribbing while heads lacked solidity. Warm days and foggy nights lowered quality. Demand grew for best stock and prices edged up though other stock moved slowly. Carloads and crates sold at 1.75 to 2 dollars, sixes in good demand at 90 cents to 1 dollar. A new CIO union chartered for lettuce industry, United Cannery Agricultural Packing and Allied Workers of America, claims over 3,000 local members plus 600 field workers.
Springdale Aug 13 The Grape Growers Control Association outlined crop estimates for 2,400 acres across 800 growers in Washington and Benton counties. A Washington County Farm Bureau meeting urged pledges to follow the control agreement and price of 15c per four-quart basket for No 1 grapes and 13c for No 2s led by S T Cantrell of Springdale.
Department of Agriculture reports total apple production for 1937 at 202,274,000 bushels based on August 1 conditions. This compares with 117,506,000 bushels in 1936 and the 1928–32 average of 164,355,000. August 1 projection is 4 percent above July 1. Prospects favor the largest crop since 1931, with northern and central regions varying due to insect activity and weather.
Flora Illinois August 13 friends of Earl Arbuthnot sales manager and F H Simpson of the F H Simpson Company report they are among those benefiting from the local oil boom. A farm owned by Arbuthnot Simpson and others yielded a 3 000 barrel dairy producer well with more wells planned on the 240 acre farm.

About 50 representatives from cold storage houses attended the Association of Refrigerated Warehouses meeting in the Crystal room of Hotel Sherman Chicago during the International Apple Association convention. W M O Keefe read a 15 member committee report proposing industry welfare measures and potential by law changes being referred to the executive committee for action.
Fresno reports show the table grape market steady to weaker as deciduous fruit shipments fade. Grape movement rises with Arvin Bakersfield and Fresno districts supplying most daily loadings. 100 car mark reached August 7. Thompsons Richiers Malagas moving from Tulare county. crop size up modestly with larger juice crop and no raisin carryover.
Robert Johnston of Paducah head of Johnston Brokerage Company died after an emergency operation in Chicago's Presbyterian Hospital. He was in attendance at the International Apple Association convention when stricken. Survived by widow and two young sons, plus mother, sister in Franklin NC, two brothers Fred and Jack, and a sister from Tampa.

The International Apple Association celebrated its 42nd anniversary in Chicago with four days of business sessions and entertainment. Delegates from major U.S. markets and foreign countries attended, with leaders from the industry addressing topics from advertising to foreign trade. The convention opened with welcome remarks from Judge John J. Sonsteby and a greeting by Joseph A. Schwalb as the gavel was presented by the New York Fruit Auction Corporation.
August 1 crop reports indicate a 1937 potato yield of about 402.537 million bushels, close to July 1 estimates, with 81.3 percent of normal conditions. If kept, the total crop would be 22 percent higher than 1936 and 8 percent above the 1928 32 average, aided by favorable late area growth and high per acre yields. Losses are noted in eastern Virginia, while Rocky Mountain and Pacific regions report excellent growing conditions.
Boston August 13 A work stoppage by receiving and delivery clerks at the Boston market was settled late Thursday night after a long conference.
