Government's Apple Crop Estimates Report

Washington August 10 1917 Agricultural Department figures show the nation at 64.0 percent condition with a total yield of 200 241 000 bushels and commercial crop 24 996 000 barrels for July 1 1917. Compared with last year 57.2 percent 202 248 000 bushels and 25 695 000 barrels. August 1 1917 condition 59.2 percent indicating 187 741 000 bushels and 22 644 000 barrels. Indicates a decline in commercial yield about 12 percent from 1916 with a 7 percent drop in total yield. Food conservation efforts may raise the share saved this year.

Apple shortage hits Baldwins in New York state

Rochester Aug 11 The New York apple crop is the smallest in years with Baldwins chiefly short across the belt. Estimates place the state commercial crop around 4.4 million barrels this year vs 12.6 million last year, with Wayne Oswego and Niagara among the hardest hit.
