The Food Administration and the U S Department of Agriculture urged the American Cooperage Manufacturers Association to provide cooperage stock to sell apple barrels at 85 cents each. Some barrels were bought for 60 cents in March and April, rising to 85 cents, with a few sales at 90 cents due to extra costs. The Packer reportedly will not face a major shortage of cooperage as output is urged to be large this season.
The August 1918 apple crop report from the Bureau of Markets puts the total U S commercial apple crop at about 24,285,000 barrels, down from 25,711,000 on July 1. A New York crowd of 100 to 150 is expected to travel to Philadelphia for the apple shippers convention next week. They plan to leave Monday night by automobile or via a chartered parlor car arranged by the Boosters Club with Carl W. Kimball in charge. The party aims to reach Philadelphia for the final days of the meeting, with departures set for Tuesday.
