The twenty-first annual meeting of the International Apple Shippers Association opened in Chicago on Aug. 6, with a larger attendance than the first gathering two decades ago. President Pennington presided as the convention hall filled and discussions centered on ripples in the apple trade.
The session drew a crowded room as leaders discussed the present crop situation and future price prospects. President Pennington outlined committee appointments and reported on the passage and status of agricultural bills including the standard fruit and vegetable bill, McKellar cold storage bills, and the New York grade law, with notes on ongoing lobbying efforts and upcoming events.
In New York on August 6, IL & CG Greenbaum jobbers at 58 Ludlow Street failed with no visible assets. Total creditor claims reach about 6000 dollars. Five Greenbaum brothers operated the business for years. Creditors pressed for settlement, but the family offered little. internal disputes over misappropriated funds hindered negotiations. Individual claims include 3360 to sh & Pendleton, 500 to Te. P. AS Coy, 900 to Parke & Allison, 500 to John Nix & Co, and smaller amounts to several others.
In Chicago on August 6 Percy Miler of Chicago and Denny Ryan of Minneapolis, famed potato kings, swapped stories and a skating challenge at the Sherman hotel cafe. They bet $20 on who could circle the artificial ice enclosure, Percy won the skate but the night cost Ryan $42.85 for dinner amid the lively dining room entertainment.
Frank W and James Lestrade proprietors of Lestrade Brothers packing stock butter at 129 Duane Street were indicted by a federal grand jury. They face charges of defrauding the government of about 150000 by molding and selling adulterated butter. Investigations into their business had run since 1906 with use of mill power. A hearing was postponed for two weeks by agreement of counsel.
New York market shows steady activity with 49 cars of peaches Monday 43 Tuesday 34 Wednesday and 30 Thursday. Prices ranged from 1 to 1.30 with some at 1.75 on early days and 1.25 to 2 with most around 1.75 later. Fruit mainly Georgia and Early Belle varieties plus 30 cars Friday.
Governor Whitman commuted the sentences of 13 poultry dealers on Blackwell's Island from three months to two months and remitted a $300 fine. The men, serving now, will be released August 9 and return to work by Monday next.
Rochester officials and railroad superintendents from the New York Central system met to coordinate handling of the Western New York peach harvest. They expect heavy tonnage, with refrigerator cars required to move fruit to markets. schedules target August 25 with peak shipping in September.
At the International Apple Shippers Association meeting at the Hotel Sherman, activity was minimal and buyers scarce. Western New York Brewers seek 3.75 a barrel for Grade A Baldwins. some buyers offered 2.25 per barrel. In the Hudson River district little trading occurred, with several deals from Illinois, Michigan and Calhoun County averaging 2.60 per barrel for No 1 Jonathan on the St. Louis wharf. The Hood River Oregon Apple Growers’ Association sales manager Wilmer Sieg marked his birthday during a Chicago convention week. Sieg, famed for handling many U S floods trade matters and owning a prize cat valued at $10,000, refused to reveal his age and joked about a birth record dating to 1359 while friends doubted the claim.
The potato acreage in the Greeley district is about 25 percent larger than last year. Tubers are in excellent condition and a large crop is expected. Estimates place the crop at about 4000 cars, much larger than last year. Cabbage and onion crops also look fine.
California citrus shipments for the week July 28 to August 4 show 206 cars to Southern Pacific lines, 224 cars to Santa Fe, total weekly 90 cars daily breakdown: July 29 90 cars, July 30 93 cars, July 31 117 cars, August 1 117 cars, August 2 56 cars, August 3 72 cars, August 4 72 cars. Northern California contributed one car on August 2. Season totals through August 4 reach 156,630 cars from central and northern California and 45,283 cars from southern California, a grand total of 201,913 cars.
Daily cantaloupe shipments reach 316 cars from Mesa and 204 cars from Moapa with four cars of watermelons also listed. Southern California totals show 18 cars on July 29 and minor daily shipments in early August. Season total: 4,550 cantaloupe cars including 3,208 outside shipments.
California vegetable shipments for the week ending August 4 numbered 13 cars, bringing the season total to 3 377 cars. The report notes Os Angeles area activity and highlights a weak week amid ongoing movement.

Major creditors include P Be of Hartford Green & Co Boston and Goldsmith Wall & Co, amid wider claims from numerous lenders.
At the Naru market in Chicago August 5, demand was moderate and activity light with light receipts. Calif lemons sold around 2.50 to 2.75 per unit depending on quality, Valencia oranges of best quality were offered at 5.50 to 6.50, mostly from California, while overall stock remained in good shape and prices reflected a stagnant demand.
The Garrett Kytle Company of Charing Georgia files a complaint against Thomas A Vaughn Company of Nashville over two carloads of watermelons sold in Nashville. The case details telegrams, price quotes, consignments, and alleged misstatements of car sales and returns, with disputed totals and drayage charges. Garrett-Kytle claims Vaughn misrepresented prices and withheld proper accounting, seeking settlement and restitution.
