Berry Grower Can Set Limit on 1939 Crop
St Paul Minn Aug 6 What the grower does to his strawberry bed from now until Labor Day will largely set the limit on next year's crop, says A N Wilcox horticultural at University Farm. For June bearing varieties, cultivate new patches every ten days and after every rain, keep rows narrow and roots healthy. Stop runner growth with a runner cutting device as rows narrow, and remove blossoms first season. Renovate old patches by mowing and burning, cut rows to eight to 12 inches, plow soil into aisles, spread barnyard manure, then harrow and cultivate anew. Everbearing plants set out this spring should have blossoms removed early in July. Older patches bearing this year may be fertilized and cultivated for a late summer crop.
