A Rochester survey reports wholesale movement of fruits and vegetables during 1917-18 and 1920-21, analyzing freight costs and profits. It shows railroads absorbing the largest share of the price, with shippers and wholesalers receiving smaller margins, and notes deflation-era losses in 1920-21 despite railroad profits. The record covers 9,476 cars and reveals freight charges averaging 32.79 percent of sales, with varying shares by commodity and route.
Atlanta August 4 The McGill firm tied to Ed gar O Oetgen the produce crook is overquoting the market and taking goods from Florida. They quoted 4 4.50 on tomatoes 2 73 on peppers and paid crates losses of 1 per crate. A Yamato Florida shipper was told to pay 2 for 50 crates of fancy tomatoes and drafts through Lowry National Bank. The draft for 100 went unpaid and tomatoes remain unsettled.
The Interstate Commerce Commission examiner finds California to New York through rates for fruits and vegetables over $4.28 per 100 pounds are unreasonable and proposes retaining pier delivery at North River piers 20 and 21. It also condemns requiring consignees to receive at Jersey City and seeks to restore through service. The report, from a Chicago hearing, is tentative awaiting Commission approval.
Northwest apple dealers, in Seattle last week, urge shipping only extra fancy and fancy apples, keeping C grade at home amid ample supply. Sales at the convention may total 200 to 250 cars with low early prices to spur demand. Delegates toured Hood River and White Salmon Underwood districts, and Portland hosted dinners and tours before departures for Oregon and California fruit districts.
Delegates visiting the Columbia River Highway lauded its beauty with F H Richardson of Kansas City and J J Castellini of Cincinnati among the speakers. Wenatchee orchardists returned from Seattle and Hood River officials led Mid Columbia preparations with Clark Castner and others in charge.
S J Mayhood of the Bureau of Service of the Interstate Commerce Commission is stationed in New York to supervise and study the receiving and handling of perishables at railroad terminals. He tracks the situation daily and works on docks, enabling faster, informed action by the commission.
The International Apple Shippers Association elected officers at its Seattle convention closing session. President F. W. Mort of Chicago, Vice President A. R. Currie of Seattle, Treasurer George W. Davison of New Orleans, Secretary R. G. Phillips of Rochester. Executive Committee chair W. I. Wagner of Chicago with J. J. Castelli of Cincinnati, E. W. J. Hearty of Boston, B. E. Butterworth of Philadelphia, B. E. Sampson of Yakima. The committee will decide next meeting location.
The week saw demand falter early with prices easing on California lemons and Porto Rican fruits. By midweek demand steadied and prices fluctuated, with best oranges and lemons moving at varied rates while Porto Rican pineapple and grapefruit showed declines and slow sales.
Chicago August 4. The strike tied up transit causing weaker potato demand. Prices stayed low as growers paused digging due to poor shipping points. Minnesota Early Ohios fetched 1 to 1.10 dollars per sack while Kaw Valley Irish Cobbler sold around 1.10 to 1.20 dollars and Virginia No1 Irish Cobbler 2.75 dollars per barrel.
The report estimates the combined apple yield for five provinces at 3 573 820 barrels, with British Columbia foreseeing 70 80 percent of 1921 for summer and fall varieties and Western Ontario about 25 percent heavier than last year. Quebec New Brunswick Nova Scotia show varied gains and losses. Apple quality affected by scab, especially in Eastern Ontario districts including Oshawa Trenton and Carrying Place.
Kansas City reports Kaw Valley potato shipments dwindling to about ten cars daily. Growers cling to prices of 90 cents for cobblers and 65 cents for Early O hips amid light digging and cautious demand. In Jacksonville, a bankruptcy hearing for J B Mixon is set for August 23 in the U S District Court, with assets totaling $2,500 in insurance policy, $7,400 unsecured and $1,960 secured.
New York August 4. Commission merchants must obtain the government brokers license costing 50 dollars. The license, created near war’s end, caused broad debate as “commission merchants” were deemed brokers and required licensing. Past noncompliance led to back dues plus penalties. Now all New York commission merchants operate under the Brokers $50 License. The latest Washington ruling confirms the initial decision.
The United States Department of Agriculture estimates 6 752 cars of 500 bushels each for seven intermediate states: New Jersey leads with 1 613 cars, then Washington 1 566, Texas 1 092, Iowa 1 062, Kentucky 609, Virginia 1 980, and Maryland 260. Total forecast for both intermediate and early onions is 15 605 cars.
