Advance reservations surge for the International Apple Shippers Association twentyninth annual meeting in St Louis August 12 to 18. The program lists speeches by executives, officials, and industry leaders, with hotel arrangements urged to ensure ample accommodations.
Chicago August 1 Walter Farley chairman of the Perishable Sub Committee of the Mid West Regional Advisory Board of the American Railway Association sent a letter this week to Chicago potato handlers urging immediate unloading of potatoes from refrigerator cars on team tracks. The Pennsylvania system embargo on potatoes last week left about 300 cars idle with slow movement and a potential $25 daily demurrage threat once free time expires. The committee seeks release of idle equipment to prevent jeopardizing the fruit and produce trade if carriers impose charges. Other Chicago committee members include J. W. Eliott E. P. Miller S. Briggs William Garfitt N. J. Miller and S. J. O'Regan.
Cantaloupes from sections in Columbia Tennessee and Vincennes Indiana began moving this week. The Tennessee acreage is larger than last season and Indiana shipments from the growing and shipping district are now advancing. Quality of the output this season is seen as good.
Chicago August 1 reports solid demand for early apples of good quality. Receipts were moderate and prices held firm with best Transparenta at $2 per bushel. Early Harvest Red Astrachans Benoni and Duchess traded around $1.50 to $1.75, with Golden Sweets and Red Junes at similar levels.

Malaga grape prices hold at 1.47 75c f o b with Thompsons 60 75c. Cantaloupes fetch 2.52 and 2.72, while Muscats show signs of shortage due to water stress and uneven irrigation. Buyers await f o b auctions and market developments as the industry navigates a cautious trade.
Chicago reports a modest improvement in potato market for sacks while barrels stay weak. Congested lines and an embargo on one rail have shifted power to buyers, with some traders taking losses. Carlot moves show No 1 Irish Cobblers selling at 1.25 to 1.50 for sacks and 2.50 to 2.75 per barrel for No 1 Irish Cobblers from the eastern shore.
Receipts of peaches remained heavy in New York with Georgia fruit dominating daily arrivals of about 75 to 100 cars. Early Jersey peaches sold around 1 to 1.5 dollars per bushel basket while Elberta and Georgia Belle varieties fetched 3 dollars on firmer days with North Georgia Belles at 2.50 to 3 dollars.
Kenneth W Day of Sqobel Day organizes a car for Apple Shippers convention via Cincinnati. Huber’s train leaves Sept 11 from Pennsylvania Station at 4:50 pm for St Louis, with many New York delegates and several others from Baltimore Scranton Youngstown and Boston signing up to join.
In August Cincinnati hosts traveling delegates bound for the St Louis apple convention. The local trade committee led by T J Ryan reports a Presidential Special train leaves August 11 at night carrying a crowd from Eastern cities and Cincinnati, arriving in St Louis before the convention. Washington Aug 1 A federal ruling states lug boxes of grapes shipped interstate or foreign are misbranded if not labeled with net contents. Dr C A Browne chief of the Bureau of Chemistry says packages must plainly show quantity in largest unit whether weight or dry measure.
James H. Baden, chairman of the brokers division of the American Fruit and Vegetable Shippers Association, announces that headquarters will be at the Hotel Chase during the International Apple Shippers' Association convention in St. Louis. He invites all brokers to use his quarters as a stamping ground during the annual meeting.

Long Island barrels fetch 2 2.30. Jersey Cobblers 1.50 2 per 150 pound bag. Virginia fancy stock 2 2.50. medium grades 1.50 2. No. 1 on a package varies by grade leading to pricing confusion. Thursday market stronger with No 1 range at 2.25 3 per barrel.
In Los Angeles on August 2 a bankruptcy petition led to William H Moore Jr named receiver for Catanzaro Fruit Company Inc. 778 Market Court. he is now in charge of the firm’s assets.
T L Turney of R E Cochran Co Inc departs Saturday for his yearly visit to the Pacific Coast. The trip aims to review operations, meet clients, and explore new business opportunities on the West Coast.
Kansas City August 1 reports two major lines the Chicago Burlington Quincy and Union Pacific have withdrawn the diversion schedules on potatoes and vegetables from Idaho Colorado Utah Wyoming Nebraska to the listed states. Protests and ICC complaints followed and shippers claim the rules stem from Colorado warehouse interests. Denver July 23 1924 correspondence notes protest to the diversion ruling and confirms that Union Pacific tariff items and supplements have been filed and adjusted with Western Trunk Lines Committee and ICC.
New York Aug 1 The fruit and vegetable firm C H and C W Kimball 204 Franklin street dissolves. Carl W Kimball and Charles H Kimball formed the company in 1907 after Austin Kimball retired. Carl will operate the Kimball Export Company from 97 Warren Street focusing on Europe with relationships to James Adams Sons Co and others. Charles will run C H Kimball & Co with Sam Sobel, who has 15 years with the firm. Dennis Kimball Pope remains connected to Western fruit export.
Chicago August 1 Nothing new on South Water street removal progress. The South Water Street Removal Association Inc has elected R U Neal as secretary. Offices will be at 2 W South Water street. The organization counts about 225 members.
A July 26 fire on Produce Row in Yakima wipes out fruit warehouses and storage facilities valued near 500000. The Holtzinger Block Roche Fruit and Produce Company Yakima Fruit and Cold Storage were burned plus Hafener Fruit Company now leased by Prentice Packing and Storage. Several firms plan immediate rebuilding and new leases to resume contracted peach and pear deliveries.
The Federal Trade Commission charges nine brokers including J R Spear Hartman Manahan J L Hardesty J A Morgan Sons W K Morgan W Allen Jacobs Paul Brown Chadbourne with conspiracy to suppress strawberry competition in Chadbourne North Carolina. They allegedly coordinated to set prices, buy collectively, and ship to principals in Chicago New York Philadelphia and Boston, harming growers who lack other outlets. The case proceeds after a 30 day answer period.
W J Piowaty announces resignation as manager, secretary and treasurer effective September 1. P J Claussen says Piowaty leaves to start his own business while the firm continues with Daly and Schroenheider as active managers. Piowaty plans to pursue independent fruit and vegetable ventures, focusing on carrots.
