In Washington and El Centro Calif April 29 shippers from Imperial and Yuma valleys gathered for an AAA hearing on a proposed marketing agreement and order for canta melons. The sentiment was favorable with few objections to provisions, and the transcript was forwarded to AAA.
El Centro California April 29 The Imperial valley shipped just 15 cars of cantaloupes so far this season light production from brushed acreage cool nights and 80 degree days slow movement. Harvest of crown set cantaloupes is well along while fresh yield from the second set hints at stronger movement next week May 10. Picking may start May 5 to 10 with last ten days of May unlikely heavy.
Loxley Ala April 29 The early Triumph potato market dipped last week but demand rose Friday and Saturday April 22 23, outrunning supply and prompting extensive digging to meet needs. Prices rose to 1.20 1.30 with a strong undertone as quality entering cars improved. Baldwin county ships 95 percent Triumphs with Irish Cobblers upcoming. 600 car White Rose deal also under way. About 2000 2200 cars shipping next week, total Baldwin deal near 4500 cars after a prior forecast cut. Weather has been exceptionally favorable for harvest this season.

Kansas City April 29 complaint alleges A C Wesley operator of a West Point Mass fruit and produce business issued checks that bounced E C Adams Co Birmingham Ala say he had bought merchandise on cash basis for months and on April 16 gave a check returned for lack of funds sheriff reports Wesley withdrew his funds and is being sought with other checks in hand
Lakeland April 29 nine prominent citrus operators were appointed to a committee to work with the Florida Citrus Commission planning group to shape plans for marketing the 1938 39 crop. The members include Chester C Fosgate L Maxcy A B Herlong J J Parrish Howard Phillips Lawrence Gentile R E Fender Commander and Fred Davis. The group met to review marketing conditions and support continuing and expanding the existing advertising program, with a May 6 meeting date planned for final planning of regulations and further market development.
Kansas City April 29 Members of the trade express concern over Supplements to Consolidate Freight Classification No 12 advancing class ratings for vegetables cantaloupes and melons set to take effect May 25 in Western and Illinois classifications The changes move beets parsnips carrots and radishes to higher classes while onions and cantaloupes in crates rise to Class 35 amid proposals to curb further increases and preserve lower class rates The industry debates possible actions against consolidations and revisions to exemptions in tariffs.
Boise Idaho April 29 Eleventh annual convention of the Idaho Shippers Traffic Association opened with record attendance. Both Boise and Owyhee hotels filled and overflow rooms ready. Secretary Austin Anson and S C Vandenburg announced a strong program of speeches and social events for the gathering.
Florida growers expect early shipments with heavier loads starting around mid May. Acreage remains near last year despite dry conditions and recent frosts. Weather could quicken development if warmth returns, while marketing arrangements may be formed to prevent overlapping shipments.
Harlingen Texas April 29 The spring tomato movement in the lower Rio Grande valley is under way slowly with about 20 cars daily this week. Shippers expect no big rise until May 10 due to frost and wind damage this month. Top mature clusters survived with minor loss but blooms whipped off. Several areas face delayed heavy movement until May 10 to 16. Falfurrias will ship a few cars daily, no heavy load until about May 25. Yoakum reports frost and wind damage with recent rain. East Texas district around Jacksonville and Tyler plans shipments beginning June 1, with larger acreage but reduced yield from frost and rain.

Wenatchee April 29 Conrad Rose founder of Wenatchee Produce Co died Monday at 76 after long illness. He shipped the district’s first full carload of apples in February 1902 and built a business with packing cold storage and shipping plants across multiple towns. Survived by widow two daughters and two sons with funeral held under Elks auspices.
Cincinnati Wholesale Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Dealers Association announced a summer hours schedule effective May 2. Markets operate Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday and Saturday start at 4:00 a.m. and close at 12:00 noon. Thursday hours are 40 am to 2:00 p.m.
The Federal Communications Commission barred a 15 percent hike in domestic telegraph rates, ruling against the rate increase this week. Salinas California April 29 J M Foote trustee of the Salinas Watsonville district six dozen lettuce control program ordered discontinuance of loading of sixes effective yesterday to continue through the peak of the deal. The move aims to control shipment volume over the next two weeks as 85 percent of shippers joined the pact turning a blanket bill of sale over to the trustee for all lettuce packing sixes or smaller. If demand falls the trustee may raise grading standards to cut back surpluses. last week fives and sixes were scarce while rain slowed loading and midweek shipments rose to about 180 cars daily with prices around 2 50 to 2 74 per crate for fives and sixes.
The Point Coupee Potato Growers Association sent a letter urging district growers to vote against the potato marketing agreement. It warns elimination of the No 2 grade harms growers since those potatoes are the profit side of the industry. A J Schetnayder president and Leo C Carmouche secretary are cited as association officers.
