Tennessee expects between 1200 and 2000 carloads of strawberries this season with about 450 carloads likely to be shipped from the eastern part of the state. The midwestern states report lower acreage and fewer berries to ship than last year.
Reporting from Missouri and Arkansas steady gains and losses in land and vehicle figures. Officials forecast a regional shift with Arkansas expecting 400 to 450 cars and Southwestern Missouri around 450 this year. The broader western river region shows a net decrease overall.
Humboldt Tenn April 4 prospects for the strawberry crop in Tennessee are very good with favorable conditions and expected average yields. Plantings are in second and third year and replanting increases acreage by about 50 percent for next season. Express shipments begin around April 20 to 25 with Klondyke, Aroma and Gandy favored in West Middle and East Tennessee.
O. D. Gilman of Chicago and Leon Frank of New Orleans bought current packed eggs in New York and Chicago markets this week. They reportedly hold 200 to 250 carloads and paid 41 to 43 cents per dozen, with deals involving Davis Cleaver Co and various receivers. trade notes export demand may rise but remains uncertain.
Patrick O'Hearn filed a personal bankruptcy petition in Minneapolis. The American Produce Company at 335 Plymouth Building is not insolvent and has not filed for bankruptcy. O'Hearn says he has no connection with the firm beyond prior association. The company deals in butter eggs cheese and poultry and is represented by secretary Thomas A Hunter.
Expert opinion splits on damage to peaches pears cherries and other early fruits in Virginia West Virginia and Maryland after a cold spell from Monday night to Wednesday morning. Temperatures fell to 18 to 21 degrees on April 1 the lowest in 41 years. Winds were strong and moisture around 35 percent. Western Maryland growers fear at most half a crop will be gathered while Winchester districts report little to no damage in commercial orchards.
Report from Los Angeles indicates California strawberry acreage for 1919 around 4000 acres, up from 3800 last year. Southern California shows growth as growers expand in Los Angeles county with berry fields attributed to Moneta and Gardena districts as a key area.

New Jersey business notes a new concern named Jersey City Egg Company at 135 York Street Jersey City. Harry Frank, formerly of Newark, appears to lead operations for Robert E Schaffer of New York while Schaffer travels in Virginia. Frank once partnered with W G Banks Co of Newark, tied to a prior egg and poultry shipper failure.
Rioting erupted on New York docks as Pennsylvania pier managers attempted a delivery order. Buyers blocked shipments, police intervened, and only authorized firms could unload on the piers. Old Dominion shipments faced theft concerns but the arrangement reduced stolen packages on Pennsylvanian piers.
Seattle dealers connect the name G. W. Shaw in The Packer with A. G. Brown, a Seattle man once active as National Poultry and National Produce Company operator. The Norfolk Section in Virginia reports reduced strawberry production over several years, affecting the Central Western States and the Atlantic coast region. The trend highlights persistent decline in yield and supply for local markets.
Reports from growers and shippers in the Carolinas Maryland and Norfolk Virginia indicate lower strawberry output than last year with labor shortages and other factors reducing the crop. Virginia and Maryland points like Norfolk Berlin Willards and Fruitland report smaller or uncertain crops as 32 quart crates remain the standard packaging.
Cincinnati April 4 Railroads this week refuse to accept local net freight shipments of ice packed Southern vegetables such as radishes and other bunch goods. Gulf Coast ice packed vegetables previously arrived here in carlots and were distributed to Ohio Valley markets. the order may curtail carlot receipts and shift volume to nearby markets unless rescinded. The matter will be taken up with railroad officials next week.
The Carolinas face further declines in strawberry acreage this year by 10 to 15 percent due to shift of labor and higher tobacco interest. The report from the Bureau of Crop Estimates notes the continued heavy cut and marks the trend in Chadbourn N C. Continued on Page 9AA.
