Spud Show Plans Dropped in Midwest

Chicago April 3 Plans for a midwest potato show next fall have been abandoned by the Wisconsin Potato Growers Association executive committee. They will not hold the April 17 conference in Chicago to discuss the exhibit due to uncertain assurances from commercial sources. W. C. Phelps returns to Los Angeles with canta loupes from Imperial valley and reports conditions favorable for an early season. The Duncan Campbell Co. operates a large 320 acre field in the valley and expects a heavy crop with shipments to start by May 1.

Fancy Berries Demand Hits Chicago as Arrivals Poor

Chicago April 3 There was good demand for fancy strawberries this week but most stock from Florida and Louisiana arrived in poor condition and did not move readily. Many berries were soft and moldy, one Louisiana car was refused. Florida receipts were moderate, about 2 600 Louisiana cases opened the week. Prices varied with berry condition from 60c to 2.26 per case Louisiana, best Florida at 20 26c per quart, bakers spelling at 56 100.

Freight Rates Too High for Apple Trade Affects Virginias

Eastern Fruit Growers Association and allied groups file with the Interstate Commerce Commission seeking freight readjustment on apple shipments from Virginia Maryland West Virginia Delaware and southern Pennsylvania. Philip Peters of the Fleming and Peters fruit and vegetable firm in the Gansevoort market died Tuesday morning at his home from a complication of diseases led by diabetes. A popular New York trader, he was a heavy buyer from large dealers and known as a fair and square merchant.

Wert Lands Free After Settlement In Egg Scheme

Murfreesboro Tennessee April 3 Wert charged with obtaining goods under false pretenses was jailed last week. He paid the eggs and court costs and the warrant was withdrawn. Wert claimed to be with Orlaff & Co of Cleveland backed by 2,000,000 capital and arranged weekly shipments of eggs with R. Oglesby. The case involved alleged misrepresentation and a plan to use a Cleveland firm. Wert and J. P. Peebles were connected with W. & W Painting Co and formed Orlaff Bee Co. Expensive shipments and bank references were scrutinized. Wert was released after settlement.
