At the Illinois State Fair the Republican fight centers on National Committeeman Roy O West and Mayor Thompson. Brundage and Deneen West forces align with state leaders while city hall factions seek a full county slate for 1916. Committeeman Painter backs West, and several ward leaders switch sides amid a broad candidate field for governor and other offices.
Homer K. Galpin, a campaign manager for the Mayor, says Col. Lowden seeks Thompson and Lundin support and that Lowden forces back Thompson for National Committeeman. Since the primary, Galpin has fallen out politically with the Mayor due to Fred Lundin’s activities.
Edward J. Brundage, seen as the guiding genius in Cook County Sherman efforts, sits in the same ward as May or Thompson and reportedly clashed with the campaign executive. He is expected to align Sherman interests with Roy O. West, the current National Committeeman, amid May or backed hostility.
