Chicago Tax Dodgers and Charter Fight Debated
A column argues a four year term for councilors concentrates power among a few. It attacks charter supporters as financial interests with little stake in Chicago, condemns tax dodging by Packers and trusts, and urges action on Septem ber 17. It cites Union Stock Yards Company of Omaha and director Samuel McRoberts, urging tax reform to fund schools and hospitals without tainted charity.
Tax Reform Call Aims At Chicago Outside Stock Taxability
The Chicago Eagle argues that stocks of foreign corporations owned in Chicago are taxed only partially due to Board of Assessors and Board of Review oversights. It claims back taxes could yield about twenty million dollars over five years, funding firemen salaries, teachers pay, and city improvements. It cites Swift & Company, Armour & Company, Libby’s and numerous Swift holdings as examples of assets in Chicago that escape taxation, urging investigations and action by officials and leading Chicago businessmen.
