Wildcat banks and rise of Chicago's early lenders
Chicago’s early banking era saw wildcat notes secured only by public confidence. The 1851 banking act and the Merchants' Loan and Trust Company helped suppress unstable institutions. By 1868 national banking spread, with First National and others expanding rapidly as fires and panics tested their resilience and reforms built lasting trust.
