Chicago registered voters surpassed 800000 for aldermanic elections, with 126628 names added on Tuesday and 74596 men and ? women to total 808942. The surge tied to a possible wet or dry election and Socialist strongholds, notably the Second ward adding over 8000 names.
The Dry petition is dead after 44 279 names were struck off by the election board leaving 105 475 valid signatures. Required 106 427. shortage 952. Additional checks on 50 354 names may raise the shortfall to 7 496. Instruction No 4 urged married women to sign with current names.
An Associated Press dispatch says the Government will extend control to leading express companies. The railroad administration officially indicated that Adams, American, Wells Fargo, Southern, Great Northern, Northern, Canadian, and Western would be affected. Last year express profits lagged behind a previous peak, with some firms like Adams posting deficits in late months amid wartime policy shifts. Representatives have pressed for government seizure since rail control began.
The Chicago liberty loan committee plans personal letters to about 200000 bond buyers from last fall urging them to purchase the third issue and persuade neighbors. Letters will go from 105 West Monroe Street as part of a city wide drive involving the Red Cross Y M C A and similar groups.
