Political shifts threaten independent judiciary in Cook County

The major parties have pushed a law ending judicial primaries, leaving nominations to party conventions. Five Republican and five Democratic judges will be chosen this fall, with nominees to fill the Circuit Court vacancy and two new Superior Court posts. Critics warn the plan cements partisan control, risking an appointive judiciary and reduced voter choice. Names mentioned include Oscar Hebel and Anton Zeman as potential nominees amid contested seats.
