A heated Chicago mayoral contest divides Democrats with critics labeling candidate Lewis a rich man’s pick while opponents urge retirement of long-time officeholders. Report notes council inaction on proposed vice and liquor ordinances and tension with federal authorities over enforcement, as military personnel assess candidate prospects.
Reported strong pull by Democratic insiders keeps council from passing a vice crackdown. Brig Gen Charles Dawes former comptroller of the currency and Chicago bank president elected unanimously treasurer of the National Drainage Congress. Brundage and followers request national chairman Hays to arbitrate discord within Chicago Republicans. They endorse Hays claim at a private dinner as correct and urge Frank L. Smith and Frank O. Lowden to act as arbitrators, pledging to accept their decision to restore party harmony.
Federation of Labor announced that 170 of 300 locals favored the new party while a socialist dominated twelve objected claiming the socialist party is labor's party.
Joseph P. Haas, Recorder of Deeds, presented the county with a Christmas check for 948.95 for release deed fees he collected as successor in trust. He says past accounting was lacking but fees belong to the public and notes he saved the county 25 724 by enforcing a month's vacation of certain employees.
The association elected A. J. Kelley of Pennsylvania F. H. Newell of Illinois H. M. Sparbee of Iowa John A. Kruse of Louisiana and J. L. Craig of California as vice-presidents during elections held for the terms starting in 1911 and again in 1913.
Chief Garrity said celebrations must be within the law and no violations would be sanctioned. All places of amusement, wet or dry, must close at 1 o clock. He planned to discuss plans with Mayor Thompson soon.
The Brundage committeemen back a three man peace commission with Will Hays Frank L Smith and Frank O Lowden to harmonize Illinois Republican factions after tensions in Cook County. The eighteen elected committeemen endorse Hays recent calls for party unity.
County Treasurer Harry R. Gibbons announced he would advance 700000 to ensure teachers in Chicago receive their pay before Christmas. The move comes after the County Court delayed payment in a tax dispute involving the Board of Education.
A special committee on state legislation will pass on bills before the council acts. The city debates consolidation of city controller treasurer and clerk roles and nonpartisan alderman elections. Cook county property assessments for 1917 and 1918 total 1.084 billion, with 822 million real estate and 262 million personal property, up 19.9 million from 1917.
At a Monday meeting the Chicago Plan Commission's request for a 76000 appropriation for preliminary work on improvements was sent to the Finance Committee. Aldermen praised the commission's work, noted funding from outsiders, and discussed opposition over ash and garbage removal.
