Gen Eisenhower announced the grand assault on Europe had begun with a call for patience and preparation. King Haakon of Norway urged restraint while De Gaulle prepared to address France. Allied broadcasts carried the news across Europe with multi language alerts.
Berlin radio reports four British parachute divisions landed between Le Havre and Cherbourg, quadrupling the Crete drop. U S battleships and coast guard units aid in the Normandy landing. American marines fight aboard ships. Berlin NBC broadcast says strong Allied air attacks hit Dieppe area near dawn.
American paratroops of seasoned veterans dropped behind the Atlantic wall to sever German communications as part of the western front assault. Twin engined C-47s and towing gliders deployed their troops in a synchronized blow aimed at disrupting Nazi lines. The troops wore steel helmets and red white blue insignia as they moved to clear and cripple communications.
Eyewitness account from London date June 6 describes the first Allied spearhead parachuting into German-occupied France in northern Normandy. A C47 crew witnessed Americans jumping with arms and gear as tracers lit the sky during the invasion.
Weather report notes cloudiness in Chicago and Illinois with a shift to clearer skies tonight and tomorrow cooler today and warmer tomorrow. Chicago awoke to news of the Allied invasion of France as radios and newspapers carried the unconfirmed reports. WGN and Mutual interrupted programming to announce the invasion just before midnight with official confirmation at 2 32 a m. The Tribune switchboard logged 360 calls in four hours as residents absorbed the moment. Reverend James E Naughton announced early masses being said for invasion troops with a special 12 10 p m service.
Rome falls into Allied hands as American British and French troops seize the city. General Clark hails the day from Capitoline Hill, noting 20 000 German prisoners taken and parts of two German armies destroyed. Civilians greet troops with enthusiasm while remains of war linger in the outskirts.
British Canadian and American troops landed in northern France as part of the largest overseas operation in history. Gen Eisenhower warned of a great crusade while Montgomery commanded the assault on the Normandy coast amid heavy bombardments and windy seas.
