Moline special reports North squad coach George Senneff selects Warren 6 foot 7½ inch center Bob Rowe to match Decatur star George Riley. He joins Bob Schmidt Archie Eddy John Minteer on Lynn Waldorf's squad with several teammates from Rock Island and Davenport High School contender Bill Steele also vying for positions at Evanston.
W. L. Humphrey of Moneaqua took first in both sections of the Illinois state croquet and rogue tournament in Clinton. Harold Rogey of Downs finished second in croquet with D. N. Miller of Weldon third and Lloyd Brown of Clinton fourth. David Patterson of Decatur placed second in rogue.
Whitey Kurowski belted his 17th homer of the season in the ninth inning to lift the St. Louis Cardinals over the Brooklyn Dodgers 2 to 1. Harry Brecheen allowed five hits and eight walks while Ralph Branca was charged with the loss after a tough nine innings. The Cardinals moved three games ahead of Brooklyn for second in the National League.
The St. Louis Browns rallied from a three run Washington lead as Roger Wolff gave up five hits and four walks over six innings. Brown batters collected four in the fourth inning to seize the lead and Walter Holborow finished for the win. Binks hit a homer for Washington and McQuinn added two RBIs for St. Louis in the three games to two series victory.
Electric Eye Equipment Co of Danville defeated the Danville Moose 2 to 1 to earn the right to represent the Danville district in the state softball tournament at Rock Island. Finney pitched seven hitless innings for the winners.
Henry Wyse, the Cubs' durable pitcher and infielding star Hank Wyse, has racked up 18 of the team’s 69 National League victories this season. He remains modest as Claude Passeau and Hank Borowy receive headlines, while Wyse projects more wins in the 49 games left and credits Roy Johnson for teaching him control through a backyard practice routine.
