The Douglas Budget reports a recent survey at Fort Laramie revealing traces of the Hudson Bay Company settlement began in 1832. It notes log houses and breastworks, a historic trading point seen by Gen. John C. Fremont in 1842. Fort Laramie is described as the oldest fort, first established as a government post in 1547, with the 1869 reservation opening later abandoned.
