Hartranft arrived at 10:37 a.m. The scene at the jail was chaotic with families grieving, a sheriff's dispute, and eventual removal of the bodies to coffins as excitement spread through the crowd.
A severe quake struck Jacksonville about 11 45 last night, lasting thirty seconds with southeast to northwest motion. Buildings shook violently, crockery rattled, doors opened. The tremor was felt from St Augustine and Santa Rosa to St Marks and inland areas, a first for the state.
Dispatch from Pendleton via Walla Walla reports the execution of Indian murderers White Owl and Quit Ti Tumps at 2:30 PM. A strong guard protected the scene but no rescue attempt occurred as both chiefs, in full Indian costume, died with a death chant on their lips.
In San Francisco on January 11 the trial of Troy Dye former Sacramento county public administrator ended with a guilty verdict after twenty minutes deliberation. On January 14 a Bandmann Nielson powder plant near Golden Gate Park exploded killing four white men and unknown Chinese workers, destroying the factory and nearby buildings.
