Miners Seek 60 Percent Raise and Short Week

The United Mine Workers convention in Cleveland demanded a 60 per cent wage boost a six hour workday five day week with overtime at time and a half and double time Sundays. They called for major labor condition improvements and adjourned to await the joint ocean conference with operators in Buffalo. If a satisfactory deal is reached the convention will reconvene in Indianapolis to accept or reject it.

A veteran Union Pacific conductor, Robert L. Massey of Omaha, was shot to death in North Platte Nebraska. Police suspect the killer mistook Massey for another man and fled the scene as bystanders reported the assault. Massey’s money and wires remained on his person.
