On the western front the German line has been driven back seven miles in 48 hours amid continuous fighting. Turcos break German lines and recapture field guns. Joffre boosts morale while French, British, and colonial troops press the assaults along the Aisne, Oise, and Woevre fronts.
John W Grigg of Marconi Wireless Telegraph asserts the company will fight government power to regulate its operations. Secretary Daniels threatens to close the Biasconnet plant unless an explanation is given for routing an unneutral message from a British courier to a British admiralty agent in New York. Grigg insists the government has no power or right to interfere and says the United States is governed by military law.
Sept 21 Rheims debris shows the 13th century cathedral nearly destroyed by German bombardment along with the museum hospital and city. Allies repel attacks as French and Turcos suffer heavy losses in fierce counter moves and high ground fighting near Brimont and Lapomboelle.
Reports from Rome indicate Roumania may soon enter the European conflict. German efforts to sway Roumania failed, and a German minister was recalled from Bucharest. The cabinet’s fall is rumored while Roumanians favor joining the Allies to gain Transylvania amid mounting street protests over German troop movements.
