A troop train and a St. Louis and San Francisco freight train collided near Marafield Missouri killing twenty five soldiers and wounding thirty. The injured were taken to a rear coach for first aid as a relief train arrived. Officials reported no details on troops’ origin or destination.
Associated Press reports from Lorraine on September 17 that 108 German battalions are disbanded to fill losses, with 5000 women mobilized and boys as young as 14 pressed into auxiliary service. Military fatigue and enemy air activity show Allied bombing and American fire are slowing German operations.
A cloak room fire at the American Button factory in Waware New Jersey killed a girl a boy and a man with another girl dying after leaping from a window. Nine other girls were injured as the top floor burning plant housed 300 workers making buttons for military uniforms.
