The Associated Press reports the American advance on the Lorraine front and the seizure of war materiel, noting German morale collapse and prisoners' accounts. Paris reports Premier Clemenceau joyful as 21 000 prisoners were taken in the St Mihiel sector before Americans entered. In Washington General Pershing creates a new staff for the American army with Lieut Col Drum as chief of staff and Edward F McQlach Mn as chief of artillery.
Bridgeport machinists strike expected to end Monday with union recommending strikers return to work at a mass meeting. Also reports that American nurses held by the enemy will be supported by the Red Cross during captivity. A new relief drive for 10 million women and children in Belgium and France will start September 29. Cotton growers protest to President Wilson over raw cotton shipping rates amid market fluctuations.
