Hurricane devastates North Carolina coast and towns

Brones of desolation mark the North Carolina coast after the hurricane and ensuing flood and fire. Bell Haven and Washing ton suffered wholesale destruction, Beaufort and Morehead City faced extensive damage, bridges were swept away, and New Bern and Aurora reported heavy losses. Eastern crops were ruined and fear grows for Ocra Coke Island inhabitants as a near 500 residents may have perished.

Destructive hurricane damages reach Beaufort County area

Washington and Beaufort county suffered more than 4 million dollars in damage as a hurricane struck yesterday cutting communications. The Pamlico River overflow flooded parts of the business and manufacturing district leaving many businesses and residents affected.

Schooner Welle Wreck Off Kapolk Coast

The schooner Welle was total wrecked on the coast near Kapolk, Va. The crew of 20 people including two women and two children were rescued.

Groothess Marries Boss’s Daughter Then Loses Job

William Groothess, moved from Portage to La Crosse, married Fred Schnell’s daughter after eloping to Winona. Schnell, president of the board of public works, fired him from the city water plant project, and Groothess left town with his wife to seek new work. The couple’s ceremony occurred after efforts to stop it failed.
