County Assessor H A Andrews reports 1919 assessed property value at 33 148 552 up from 26 276 358 in 1918. County commissioners set the 1919 county levy at 7 37 mills, 9 of a mill below 1918, though the higher valuation adds 25 684 68 in revenue over the 1918 levy.
Dr. John C. Ferguson testifies on oriental issues as the Senate Foreign Relations Committee consults experts about the Shantung award. Meanwhile county commissioners finalize 1930 tax levies, cutting general county and school rates and adjusting hospital and library levies, yielding a net decrease in total county state taxes though overall taxes rise due to valuation.
Government operation of the railroads in July shows a surplus for the first time in months. Director General Hines announces preliminary figures indicate a net operating income of 77 million dollars and a net gain of 2.0 million, compared with a prior month deficit of 22.1 million and February deficit of 65.0 million. The seven month government net loss totals 290.5 million dollars.
An Evanston Wyoming car overturned near Almy after a fork misjudgment killing Erest Rya of Meher Utah Evan Thomas of Salt Lake City and William McGregor of Evanston. Ryan and Thomas died instantly. McGregor died after hours of suffering. Ryan and Thomas were unmarried a widow survives McGregor.
Senator La Follette of Wisconsin defended his sixteen hour discussion of the land leasing bill in the senate. He argued thorough debate would shape future leasing policy and protect public interests as final passage seemed likely. Senator Thomas of Colorado threatened cloture if the bill was not disposed of today, while Senator Smoot of Utah planned to keep the senate in session until a final vote.

Mrs Anna Richey a cattlewoman bound over for district court on rustling charges after a clash with a masked assailant on the range. Neighbor Charles King also held on rustling charges in bail of 5000. Co defendant Phil Lip Hassey未 arraigned. cattle shipped to Omaha with working brands claimed to be property of James and William Fossil district foresees more disclosures at trial.
Marriage licenses issued yesterday to Neuben H. Wright and Eleanor M. Simpson of Monument Colorado and Garis C. Gares and Fannie Wesley of Cheyenne. Earlier a license was issued to Frank J. Devlin of Gasper Nebraska and Fannie A. Grews of Haigher Nebraska.
Basil Miles is appointed head of a new state department division dedicated to Russian affairs. The bureau previously managed these matters, but conditions in Russia prompted creation of a separate department to handle issues related to the country.
The National Commission recommends expanding the World Series to nine games to meet high demand for seats, with the first five games sharing receipts between clubs and the winner needing five victories. The proposal awaits ratification from club owners in the American and National leagues.
Sheridan issued a personal challenge to Cheyenne and Laramie County to top the Salvation Army home service drive. County Chairman Bidward Storey said Sheridan aims to raise 90,000 and report to state chairman before Laramie County reaches 27,000. Sheridan’s quota stands at 25,000 plus an extra 5,000 as a taunting gesture.
Henry B. Hallowall, age 80, claims to be the oldest Marine in the United States. He visited the White House to pay his respects to the president. He won an orderly job there in 1869 and is the last survivor of Marines stationed at the executive mansion during the Buchanan administration.
War Trade Board lifted most export and import controls with Hungary. Licenses for American made goods except war materials are issued freely and imports to the United States become practically unrestricted. Prohibited items include aircraft, weapons, explosives, and other gear designed for military use.
The Senate today received a bipartisan draft known as the Cummins bill proposing government ended control and private ownership resumed under federal oversight. It calls for regional railroad systems, bans strikes and lockouts, and sets wage rules to be government-set. The measure rejects the Plumb plan while stressing employee protections and centralized administration.
