A lone bandit dynamited a Pennsylvania railroad express, forced crew to move valuables, shot the conductor, and escaped with bagged currency while pennies and cash were left scattered along a mountain trail. Bloodhounds pursue but no clear clue yet.

Freight steamer Nicholas wrecked by August storm

Havana reports a small freight steamer named Nicholas traveling between Hatans and Clenfuggos was lost in the August 23 tornado. Seventeen crew members were aboard. Several bodies and some cargo from the Nicholas washed ashore near the Isle of Pineau.

Readville Mass August 31 Baron Alcyon the Surmeouge N Y stallion won the second American Trotting Derby by three lengths from Axtator and others in a field of thirty eight. The race was one and a half miles with a purse of 35000 of which 15100 went to the winner. Time 3 08 1 2. It was a handicap event and it took 36 minutes to start the horses.

Battered towns San Ged and Rio Grande report extensive flood damage with hundreds fleeing as several bodies are recovered. Officials count remains, estimate losses in the millions, and a recovery train from Laredo is expected tomorrow morning.

Ten Foot Wall of Water Sweeps Rawhide Town

A cloudburst near Rawhide produced a ten foot wall of water that struck the squatter town south of Rawhide. About 130 structures were destroyed or damaged as homes and docks were flooded. Reports say two women and four children may have been affected, though verification is incomplete due to darkness. The flood surged down streets, washing buildings from foundations and filling the basin at the town’s edge.

Eastern Star Grand Chapter Event In Wyoming

Masonic Grand Lodge and the Eastern Star report a busy session in Maponie with 1760 members of the Order of the Master Star in Wyoming forming the state grand chapter. Hall reports great state development on oil and minerals

State Geologist Hall and W Williams toured Wyoming, visiting Lander Big Horn Sheridan and surrounding counties by car to assess oil gas and mineral activity. They noted high grade light oil kerosene gas and lubricating oil prospects near Newcastle Sundance and Thermopolis along with gold in South Pass and Wind River reserves and rich sulphur and coal at Gebo Big Horn. Seven tiny bodies found in fire at orphanage ruins

New York reports fire at St Michael's home for children in Rockaway Park. Seven youngsters under five were found dead in the dormitory area above the laundry where the blaze began. About 750 other children were safely evacuated by Catholic attendants as firemen saved those remaining inside.
