A lone bandit dynamited a Pennsylvania railroad express, forced crew to move valuables, shot the conductor, and escaped with bagged currency while pennies and cash were left scattered along a mountain trail. Bloodhounds pursue but no clear clue yet.
Breeman Knowles editor of the Preeman and former congressman was convicted of sending obscene material through the mail in a story about a death. He faces a fine of $500 and was involved with a subscription from a Black Hills district reader.
Havana reports a small freight steamer named Nicholas traveling between Hatans and Clenfuggos was lost in the August 23 tornado. Seventeen crew members were aboard. Several bodies and some cargo from the Nicholas washed ashore near the Isle of Pineau.
Frank Wilkoht Nye, son of the late humorist Edgar Wilson Nye, married Miss Helen Wade Mountfort Jr. in North Presbyterian Church Washington Heights New York. Only immediate relatives attended as Mountfort was given away by her father and the bride wore a traveling costume.
Pittsburg Aug sta grand jury probes peonage at the pressed steel car company plant. A district attorney and witnesses testified that workers were forced to long hours and could not leave when they wished. Testimony slated for Sept 6 before the jury.
The Aftonbladet reports many strikers are said to be starving or subsisting on bread water and fish or journeying across the country robbing potato fields as hunger grips Sweden.
In Buffalo on August 31 John C. Nicolel a private detective for the Lake Carriers association shot and killed two marina workers who he said attacked him. Police arrived to avert a lynching.
Governor Hughes was informed by Byrd Coler president of the Brooklyn Borough that Mayor McClellan misused city funds in investigations demanded by his accounts commissioner. The charges claim the probes targeted political opponents for partisan gain and drained municipal resources.
Readville Mass August 31 Baron Alcyon the Surmeouge N Y stallion won the second American Trotting Derby by three lengths from Axtator and others in a field of thirty eight. The race was one and a half miles with a purse of 35000 of which 15100 went to the winner. Time 3 08 1 2. It was a handicap event and it took 36 minutes to start the horses.
Battered towns San Ged and Rio Grande report extensive flood damage with hundreds fleeing as several bodies are recovered. Officials count remains, estimate losses in the millions, and a recovery train from Laredo is expected tomorrow morning.
A cloudburst near Rawhide produced a ten foot wall of water that struck the squatter town south of Rawhide. About 130 structures were destroyed or damaged as homes and docks were flooded. Reports say two women and four children may have been affected, though verification is incomplete due to darkness. The flood surged down streets, washing buildings from foundations and filling the basin at the town’s edge.
Masonic Grand Lodge and the Eastern Star report a busy session in Maponie with 1760 members of the Order of the Master Star in Wyoming forming the state grand chapter. Officers elected include Worthy Grand Matron Betella Bartlett and Grand Matron J M Dougie, with several posts still to be announced. A notable drill by Oak Leaf chapter members highlighted the evening as Wyoming adds Torrington and Riverton chapters, growing one of the state’s largest groups.
State Geologist Hall and W Williams toured Wyoming, visiting Lander Big Horn Sheridan and surrounding counties by car to assess oil gas and mineral activity. They noted high grade light oil kerosene gas and lubricating oil prospects near Newcastle Sundance and Thermopolis along with gold in South Pass and Wind River reserves and rich sulphur and coal at Gebo Big Horn. Prospects across Bar Lodge Copper Mountain Sheridan Buffalo and other areas show ongoing exploration and development.
State Geologist Hall reports a $400,000 swindle in northern Wyoming where alleged operators took cash for claims never developed. He names Williard Tranter of Sheridan as one tied to the scheme and notes 400 oil claims fraudulently located near Dour. Hall warns that claim locations require discovery work and vows enforcement of strict oil wildcatting law.
The Ranger Auto 15, after leaving Racine Wisconsin, heads to San Francisco on an endurance test and is due in Cheyenne today. Frank X. Zirben oversees the car. the State Leader contains telegrams and letters for him, mailed for delivery on arrival. The paper notes unclear remaining time for the Ranger.
New York reports fire at St Michael's home for children in Rockaway Park. Seven youngsters under five were found dead in the dormitory area above the laundry where the blaze began. About 750 other children were safely evacuated by Catholic attendants as firemen saved those remaining inside.
