General Felix Diaz remains at Vera Cruz defying government orders to go to Tampico aboard the Corcovado. He contemplates a trip to the capital and may sail for Ha vins aboard a Mexican warship if capitals orders stand. A government envoy failed to persuade him.
In Pasco Texas on Oct 22, reports say President Huerta will win the votes of Juarez’s entire military organization for reelection. Civilians also pledge support to keep him in the presidency. Juarez factions show a split between Blanquet and Gamboa for vice presidency. General Orzo is poised to govern Chihuahua state, announced from Juarez. Judge Luis A. Martinez plans to run for Juarez district deputy.
In Philadelphia on October 22 Sidney Norman of Spokane helped push a resolution at the American Mining congress session denouncing “dishonest operations of the financially powerful.” The congress backs state laws to protect minority stockholders and holds directors liable, with infractions treated as felonies. Senator Shafroth criticized federal coal lands policy and Pinchot, urging government ownership debates amid tax concerns and Colorado land values.
Tulsa opening of the International Dry Farm Congress and exposition was postponed due to a rain storm. The week will focus on exhibit inspections from twenty states and fifteen foreign countries, with the congress proper opening October 27. Exposition buildings cover 120 acres, with the United States and Canadian governments occupying the most space as Canadian delegates launch a campaign for the 1914 congress.
In Plymouth Massachusetts on October 22 1910 evidence concluded for the government in the Jennie May Eaton murder case. Mrs Eaton stands accused of poisoning her husband Rear Admiral Joseph G Eaton as testimony described alleged remarks about poisons and a habit of poisoning on the ship. Keyes testified Mrs Eaton spoke of the admiral’s plan to Europe and questioned if her mother and husband should be put out of the way. The admiral died the following Saturday and the will left most property to Mrs Eaton with Dorothy as main beneficiary and June receiving 6000 dollars.
Official canvass by City Clerk Showalter and the election board shows Edward MacKay passing four other candidates to win the commission seat by seven votes. MacKay totals 357 with Treastle as nearest rival. Mayoral candidates Hofmann LaFontaine Tauehlin Barksdale Bell also listed.
The Rocky Mountain News, led for twenty years by ex Senator Thomas M. Patterson, is sold to John A. Shaffer of Chicago who also acquires the Denver Times for 780,000. The papers will publish from the Rocky Mountain News plant with the Times continuing as an afternoon paper and the Sunday issue dropped. Active management will be Henry D. Carbary as general manager and Kent Shaffer as treasurer.
The district court charge of first degree murder against Claude Stevens was dismissed by Prosecuting Attorney Sam Thompson due to insufficient evidence to convict. Nela Perry traveled to Laramie for the day.
In Los Angeles a trial of Dr. John Grant Lyman the Panama land promoter features maps used in promotions for the Panama Development company. Prosecutor Edward A. Regan shows government and Lyman copies lacking real bays and including a river through Agua Dulce. One pamphlet claims Panama gold worth over 400000 is found, suggesting forged imagery and inflated prospecting claims.
Four division heads at a Cheyenne club meeting presented evidence that the Greater Cheyenne club has advanced city improvements advertising civic efforts and the paying question. Members highlighted refreshments, coffee, cigars, and dining provisions supplied by supporters as part of ongoing community work.
Lewiston Mont Oct 22 A California homesteader Stane ley D Scofield and Constable A J Cheney of Denton Montana died after a dark duel in a plowed field near Denton. Cheney fell first with a breast wound, Scofield then shot Cheney and was killed by Cheney's final shot.
The jury in the Charles Porter cattle killing case failed to reach a verdict by midnight and were locked up for the night. The case involves Porter allegedly killing cattle belonging to Charles Hirsly.
Dawson New Mexico October reports state an explosion at shaft No 2 of Stag Canyon mine trapped as many as 230 miners while rescuers from southern Colorado fields arrive. Air supply is improving as teams work deeper, with 100 feet of tunnel explored and several rescued alive. Relatives gather at a relief camp as officials, including Superintendent McDermott, coordinate ongoing rescue efforts and medical aid.
A Union Traction trolley overturned near Muncie six miles west while traveling from Muncie to Indianapolis. W R Granier of Fort Wayne was killed and Simon Davie of Parker City injured likely fatally, with twenty one others hurt. Motorman Stanley Toll reported brakes failed as the car sped into a ditch and toppled bottom up.
Twenty three former East St Louis officials face indictments on graft charges arising from municipal irregularities. The case includes mayor Lambert and several former aldermen and city officers accused of conspiracy to defraud the city of large sums and improper contracts. Bond was posted by many defendants as the investigation follows earlier published charges.
