A lamp explosion in Rock Springs killed a man identified as J and burned a grandmother and two girls. The blast destroyed their home and caused extensive damage to the property.
In Rock Springs Wyoming on October 17 two women died and two others were badly burned after a lamp exploded. Mrs Alpine Hidle aged 86 and grandchildren Bernie and Olle Green aged 8 and 9 perished. Mrs Mary Green and her sister survived but injured. The house was destroyed. In Danbury Iowa also October 17 a carriage run away hurled Susanne Frank onto a bee hive causing severe facial injuries needing seven stitches.
Rochester to October 17 reports Senator Dolliver has died, a setback for La Follette's condition campaign. In Colorado Springs William Vaughn Moody dramatist died this morning from a brain tumor after arriving three weeks ago seeking health.
A Chicago governess, Elizabeth Kats, attempted suicide by inhaling gas at the Hotel Plaza after weeks of hearing voices she attributed to spiritualist theories linked to William James. She described voices urging her to come to them and spoke of a troubled mind driven by exposure to philosophy and psychology.
New York World reports B H Harriman allegedly earned 98644788 from Panama canal securities speculation. It claims purchases were made while Roosevelt favored the Panama route, and includes ledger facsimiles from Kuhn Leeb Co. The World recalls Roosevelt’s denial that any American profited from the canal purchase.
Walter Wellman and the airship America continue toward Ireland after departing from Siasconset. Wireless reports are sparse but indicate the crew is making progress despite thick weather and strong westerly winds. The team claims a potential world record for dirigible endurance as calculations show about one quarter of the distance completed.
Chicago reports Wilbur Glenn Voliva saying Zion City will ban tobacco and drugs and focus on poultry, dairying and intensive farming under a 1100 year lease. He pledges no new manufacturing plants and seeks officials aligned with administration to demonstrate a practical kingdom on earth.
Havana reports a violent storm from the southwest that surged to its peak at noon and drove water over the Malecon sea wall. The sea engulfed the city, forcing residents to higher floors as soldiers rescued hundreds. Communication inland is cut and damage feared to be enormous, surpassing the 1908 hurricane.

A platinum diamond bracelet worth $8,600, linked to a wife of a prominent family, led to a reward offer of 500 for its return. Julia Ward Howe, 91, renowned philanthropist, lecturer and author of The Battle Hymn of the Republic, died today in Middletown Rhode Island after a pneumonia attack. Funeral will be held in Boston on Thursday. Her decline had lasted weeks and she spoke briefly before death.
