Pittsburg defeated Detroit eight to six in a frigid World Series game, giving Pittsburg two wins to Detroit’s one. Weather was poor with rain and wind, yet 28 277 attended, a local record. General J Bloyd Kiow, a former congressman from Loulelawn aged 60, was badly beaten by three Black men Saturday night. King defended himself with a pocketknife and was treated in hospital. Kiow’s condition is dire and recovery uncertain as suspects flee.
Report from Washington describes a German youth known as Prod Plumbunm, 23, breaking a glass window in a local office after claiming $4,000,000 in a bank deposit by Henry G. Davis and a former Democratic VP candidate. Plumbunm says he has lived on bread and water for two weeks amid alleged wealth.
New York Oct 11 Charles W Morse a former banker and organizer known as Lee King Stemmelup may serve 15 years in Atlanta federal prison after a U S circuit court found him guilty of violating national banking laws. Morse appeals to the Supreme Court as his counsel seeks bail pending further action.
In New York on October 11 Hearst and Gaynor delivered speeches with Gaynor accusing Hearst of arrogance while denouncing his rival on issues. William Ivins, former mayoral candidate, spoke at the Hearst gathering challenging Gaynor and relayed a remark about the anti race track gambling law being unconstitutional. Hearst claimed confidence in defeating what he called a disgraceful Tammany ticket.
In San Francisco on a day described by observers as dramatic, Gunboat Smith challenged champion Jack Johnson and delivered a four round bout. Smith knocked Johnson to the canvas with a chop, stunning the crowd of about five hundred. Johnson recovered, continued fighting, and the bout ended with Smith securing the upset win as spectators cheered the unexpected result.
