An aeroplane piloted by Irving Conley of Buffalo New York fell about 60 feet at the fair ground injuring several persons two fatally Willard Natlen a colored man was struck by the engine and fractured his skull Mrs Boyd of Cumberland Maryland lost her right hand and others were struck but not seriously hurt Conley escaped with a sprained back and the machine was damaged beyond repair
In Centralia Pennsylvania a miner trapped by a coal fall near two miles from the breaker spoke with his wife through a fifty foot tube as rescuers vainly widen a fifty foot pillar. He said he had his tools and had drilled three feet of the wall. A doctor cautioned him against overexertion as efforts continued. The trapped man asked about his children and wife assured him officials expect a rescue before Friday.
Serb officials announce a shift in the war tide with their forces reoccupying Dibra and Ohrid in Albania. They say Serbians now outnumber Albanians and are pushing the opposition.
Douglas Oct 1 The second day of the state fair went well and pleased the crowd with fast races and lively events. Winners included Furvein in the quartay mile dash Fantas Time 5 12 and Tony first in two year olds trot with R C second Time 1 24 Davies Direct won the one mile trot pac e with Cap Cody second Time 2 11 Ed Wright won the barshack bucking event Mutton Billy Powell second The Fusiman four won a race in 59 seconds Henry Webb shone in the Frontier Diva backing event Blood Clabo Robbing on Cy clone impressed Gus Nylan on Bald Hornet also rode well. The Basin region exhibit tops and dairy stock shows are scarce inviting buyers to seek dairy stock elsewhere.
Lincoln Neb October 1 The state adopts the electric chair replacing hanging as its method of execution. No electric apparatus yet installed at the penitentiary and no death penalty crimes have been committed since the law was enacted. The House passed abolition but the Senate delayed action during the session.
Dr. John Casper Branner, among Stanford's oldest faculty members, was inaugurated today as the university's second president. Trustees, faculty, alumni and students joined in the open air ceremony on campus in California.
President Wilson approved today new federal regulations for migratory, game and insectivorous birds, issued by the Agriculture Department under the March 4 act. The rules split the United States into north and south zones by forty degrees and the Ohio River, set seasons mainly for the South and Pacific coast, and extend year round protection for insectivorous birds.
Albany Oct 1 The assembly board of managers rests its case in the impeachment of Governor William Sulzer. Tomorrow the high court will consider preliminary motions before defense opens its case. Expected witnesses include Louis A. Sargeley and Mrs Sulzer as well as others tied to campaign contributions and loans.
Hingham Massachusetts October 1 The inquest into the death of Rear Admiral Joseph Giles Eaton will be reopened here tomorrow District Attorney Barker of Mor r ton will direct the examination of witnesses but would not say what testimony may be developed It marks the third reopening since Admiral Eaton died at his home on March 8 The inquest began March 15 and was interrupted March 20 after Mrs Eaton was arrested charged with having poisoned her husband Police and district attorney said earlier there was evidence against Mrs Eaton but they hoped to proceed later The grand jury had indicated further action and the inquest has seen testimony from several witnesses including Hewdie and L temporari ly officers tied to the state have declined to reveal who purchased or prepared the poison suspected in the admiral's death
