Aviator Escapes Germany and Reaches London After 72 Days

Lieutenant Patrick O'Brien of Momence Illinois, the first American in the British flying corps to escape captivity, arrived in London after a 72 day fugitive trek across Germany Luxembourg Belgium and the Netherlands. He jumped from a speeding train and evaded detection by traveling at night and escaping charged wires with a self built bridge and a tunnel under the wire. He reported to American Ambassador Page and sought transfer to the American flying corps before reaching the British capital. His mother, Mrs. Margaret O'Brien, was unaware of his fate as news filtered back from Cowley Pugitive 72 Days.
