Memorial Day Observance in Cheyenne Highlights Civil War Remembrance

Cheyenne marks Memorial Day with a ceremony honoring Civil War veterans and fallen soldiers. Nineteen veterans remain to lay flowers at Lakeview and Olivet cemeteries as public officials, veterans, cadets, and citizens participate in a memorial parade led by Chief of Police C. F. Embery. Memorial addresses will be delivered by H. S. Ridgely at Lakeview and Father James Hartman at Olivet, with program elements including school children, choir, and prayers.

Oldfield Sets 2 1 2 Mile Record At Indianapolis

Barney Oldfield, renowned American auto racing pioneer, drove his Christie car on the Indianapolis speedway at 102.6 miles per hour to establish a new 2 1/2 mile record. Verdun and Alpine Front Battles Intensify As Forces Clash

Reports from the Verdun region and Alpine Tyrol describe heavy fighting. German troops reportedly seized 300 metres of trench north west of Cumieres on the Meuse while battles raged around Hill 504 and Le Mort Homme near Verdun. Yeggmen Crack Arvada Postoffice In Smash and Flight

Bandits blew the safe at Arvada Wyoming postoffice, stealing about 9000 in funds and four automatic pistols. They broke through glass and doors, scattered checks, and left with cash and stamps. No clues to the burglars were found, townspeople suspect expert work from outside.

Hugh Blue Dead Mail Messenger Pined for His Wife

Hugh Blue 63 of Wyoming died at St. John’s hospital after long illness tied to a broken life. A former rancher and longtime mail messenger, he endured loss after loss from 1913 when his wife left him, then her death, and his own decline. He came from Marietta Ohio in 1886 and is survived by a brother in Constitution Ohio. The body rests with Clyde Early.

Carranza Note Fails To Arrive On Time In Washington

In Washington on May 29 the expected note from General Carranza did not reach the State Department. Manuel Mendez, foreign office attaché, said he had no knowledge of the note. Reports said it urged withdrawal of American troops from Mexico amid a protest by eighty four Tampico region oil operators. Seizure of some American tank cars disturbed agency officials. Rumors place 22000 Carranza troops near Chihuahua City and a Chihuahua City paper quoted General Luis Herrera as ready to attack if troops are not withdrawn by June 1. San Antonio reports authority to recruit was obtained.
