An accident injures Miss Bowman while Mildred Moore, aged thirteen, mourns her grandfather and brother killed in a Bushnell crash last fall. The Ford skidded on torn dirt, rolled over, sparking a frantic search for the body as Moore recalls the moments before rescue.
May 16 Fred Chandler a local teamster and union secretary had his hand crushed when a heavy steel safe toppled at the Citizens State bank at 4 PM. His hand was severed at the wrist and he suffered leg injuries as an assistant pulled him free before supports collapsed.
Telegraphic dispatches report the First cavalry under Colonel Forts moving to Fort Russell from the border to form a full war strength regiment of 3487 men. Fort Russell will train and recruit the Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth cavalry regiments with recruits from Cheyenne Denver Sheridan and Rock Springs. By soon three full regiments will be stationed at the post as the west recruits move to training and the seasoned First cavalry drill them. A 16 year old son uncovered his mother’s body inside a chest of clothing after returning home to Cheyenne. The woman, about forty, was believed to have casually suffocated while sleeping with no signs of foul play. Post mortem found no poison or drugs. Authorities suspect temporary dementia led to an accidental death. The second portion reports the sinking of the transport Cameronia with 140 aboard.
