Government Pays For Support Of 42000 Indians Who Don’t Exist
Washington May 16 report charges that Congress has funded the care of more Indians than exist in Oklahoma. Testimony before the Senate Indian Affairs Committee shows that large sums go to Indian Service officials and salaries while only a small share reaches Indians. Figures claim about 90 percent of appropriations fund officials and overhead rather than Indian support, with 75,012 Indians in Oklahoma in 1907 leaving 42,000 supposedly supported but nonexisting. Senator Owen introduces a bill to abolish the Indian office amid calls for reform.
