Government lacks authority to stabilize prices says attorney general

In a May 1 1921 opinion to Secretary Redfield, Attorney General Palmer ruled the abandoned price stabilizing plan of the commerce department’s industrial board unauthorized by law. He said it fixed prices among producers in violation of anti trust acts and that government purchases must be by competitive bids. The document clarifies disputes between Director General Hines and the industrial board over steel prices and notes resignations accepted from board members. The report ties to broader anti trust policy and trade laws reaffirmed by Congress. Piano and furniture ads appear after the main item.
