Report from Vera Cruz describes mob action at the Brazilian legation demanding Luis Dantin, an American attache, be turned over. Secret code theft and consulate looting cited as federals move.
In Colorado's strike district, after five pm Wednesday, all persons carrying weapons will be searched and disarmed by U S army officers and soldiers. Colonel Lockett issued the order under President Wilson to the war department. A proclamation bans mines closed by the strike but allows mines operating before April 22 to continue with workers until that date. No weapons surrendered report. The coroner's jury in Forbes battle case found the deaths from gunshot wounds but did not fix responsibility.
Acting United States district attorney C. L. Rigdon asks W. E. Mullen to serve as special prosecutor in the United States v Hall for perjury. Authority from Washington arrived yesterday. Hall allegedly gave perjured testimony in the Roy Montgomery white slave case tried in federal court. Hall arrived in the city Sunday evening from Denver.
Winter overruled a motion for a new trial in the C B Helburn versus A Hanson case. Damages awarded were 1250 dollars in Luck. Clark, attorney for the plaintiff, filed the Niobrara county judgment record, which acts as a lien in Laramie County. Defendant may appeal to the state supreme court.
Report describes a field machine gun called the lead squirt used by US regiments near the Mexican border and at Vera Cruz. It fires 30 bullets in 2.4 seconds weighs 30 pounds and can be carried by an infantryman. The weapon fires in rapid succession with a hot barrel after 600 shots requiring a 12 second barrel change.
Land er May 11. Mark Little Ant a Shoshoni Indian was murdered Friday night near Riverton by George B Wolf also a Shoshoni. Wolf killed himself when police moved to arrest him. Both men had been drinking whiskey from a white man and quarreled on the way to the reservation.
In Boulder on May 11 two Walsenburg mine guards from troop D of the state militia cavalry went missing during the strike fields operations. Corporal Elmer Hoagland, son of Boulder resident Mrs. H C Hoagland and guard at the Ideal mine, disappeared after returning to duty following the Ludlow and Aguilar battles. A search had been kept secret until now as federal troops arrived.
A violent storm swept Madison Wisconsin area causing one death four injuries and extensive destruction. A Miss Oloon Klevenville was killed and four injured as a county farm laundry fell. Barns tobacco warehouses and school cupolas were lost and many towns isolated. In Des Moines Davenport and Dubuque heavy rain and hail damaged gardens nurseries and cellars with tens of thousands in property impact and street flooding.
United States soldiers under General Tasker H. Bliss at a Texas border camp are described as hardened and ready for invasion of Mexico. For months they have lived as if actively engaged, with a history of troops so prepared they could march into Mexico at a moment's notice.
New York City joined in solemn tribute as over a million people paused to honor 19 sailors and marines who perished at Vera Cruz. President Wilson attended the naval funeral at the Brooklyn Navy Yard with officials and dignitaries present, delivering a message of service and restraint. Funeral caissons draped in flags bore the fallen, and three volleys by the Marine Corps closed the service with taps and benediction by Dr. Chadwick.
In Denver on May 11 the senate killed the constabulary bill in a committee of the whole as the house passed the million dollar bond bill on third reading and approved a governor powered move to close riots affected districts saloon curbs. Harvey Gorman led the move to strike the lingering clause but failed 17 to 9.
Pecos Texas May 11 Leon Cardentis Martinez the young man whose murder conviction in the Emma Brown case drew international attention faces execution by hanging today after all legal avenues were exhausted.
Dr. J. Howell was apprised Saturday of his appointment as assistant United States district attorney for Wyoming. Howell, a prominent young Wyoming lawyer, is with the firm Pearistine and Howell and later Doueloan and Howell. He was associated with L. Rigdon during the Jinkins murder trial.
The U S Supreme Court set aside contempt convictions of Samuel Gompers John Mitchell and Frank Morrison of the American Federation of Labor in the Buck s Stove and Range Company case ruling the statute of limitations barred prosecution. A 20 day jail term for Gompers and $500 fines for the others were nullified. The ruling ends a high profile dispute spanning three administrations. The case centered on free speech and free press.
The Colorado Wyoming water dispute reaches final hearings starting tomorrow in Laramie. Special master Clyde Watts and Wyoming’s John D. Clark will review evidence over two weeks on Colorado’s tunnel transfer of Laramie River water to the Poudre.双方 counsels will draft a joint testimony packet for the U.S. Supreme Court, with argument likely set for October.
