A special federal grand jury investigating a Muscogee lawn conspiracy was completed today by Judge Marshall. The defense motion to end the inquiry over designation of a federal grand jury after statehood was overruled. The judge charged that the conspiracy to defraud the government could be proven by evidence of an overt act, with the statute of limitations not applying if a conspiracy existed at an impermissible time.
In Bowden Georgia on May 11 191? a 12 year old Mamie Price battled debris in a storm wrecked home to rescue her family. She used an axe to free her father whose arm was trapped by timbers and bleeding. A tourniquet saved his life as doctors expected recovery. The mother’s body was later recovered.
Thousands of employees in the Post Office Department stage a nationwide strike in protest against government policies. The action disrupts mail service and highlights rising labor tensions across France, with workers demanding reforms and government concessions.
In Paris the chamber adjourned postal interpellations until May 18. Within half an hour the federal committee ordered a general strike and railway mail clerks walked out. Baron Oppenheim, a Paris-born Frenchman, along with New York financiers David Liebaum and Francis Rudolph Mayer, studies coal, oil and agricultural lands in Central Wyoming. They plan large scale development in Freemont and Natrona counties this fall and summer, with millions to be spent if resources match expectations. In New York on May 11 Mrs. Mary Allman ran to a One Hundredth Street trolley scene after her son was killed by a Second Avenue car. She attacked the motorman and a streetcar inspector, ripped clothes, and then attempted suicide with a bread knife at home, where her husband stopped her. Police used reserves to escort the frightened motorman to the station as over 600 bystanders surged.
Deaver Colo May 13 The Harriman railroads negotiate a deal with Colorado Fuel and Iron for more than 2 million dollars of steel rails. US Steel plants also vie for the contract with Colo fuel and iron likely to win a large share. Union Pacific has moved rails across its system for two years and will place an order starting at about 60 000 tons worth roughly 1.4 million dollars, with delivery over two years. The order covers Union Pacific Southern Pacific Oregon Short Line Cananea Yaqui River and other Harriman routes in Colorado and beyond.
