French Enabled to Conduct Quick Raid and Take Prisoners

In the Lorraine sector American artillery foiled a German plan for a gas projector barrage. The Germans aimed to trap the line at the junction of American and French sectors, but a heavy American counterwhell fire disrupted the setup. The French right wing then raided German trenches, capturing over twenty prisoners. an American patrol clashed with Germans on the right and forced a retreat.

Submarine Toll Falls by Half in April Says French Data

French statistics released in Washington show allied and neutral ship losses in April near one half of April 1947 levels. April losses total 81,651 gross tons compared with 643,685 gross tons a year earlier. Attacks now rely more on torpedoes, as merchant ships are better armed, making submarine operations costlier for the enemy.

Twelve Wyoming counties exempt from draft rosters

Twelve of Wyoming’s twenty one counties are exempt from the draft of 181 fighting men to be entrained between May 20 and 30. Exemptions come from quotas already filled by enlistment, with remaining counties assigning numbers such as Albany 4, Carbon 4, Converse 4, Promontory 15, Lincoln 42, Niobrara 1, Sweetwater 45, Uinta 11. The total quota changed from 167 to 181 as some units were withdrawn or not assigned.

Report from Pensacola shows a plane burst into flames during a practice flight off Santa Musa yesterday. Richard McCalla of Toledo and George Echeats Pawtucket were fatally injured and died in the wreck.

Lack of Steel Delays Shipbuilding at Hog Island

Philadelphia May 11. Twenty of twenty five warships at Hog Island shipyards idle due to steel shortages. United States Steel Corp Bethlehem mills and other large producers fail to supply needed steel while Charles M Schwab faces a delaying foe. Despite some speed up since Schwab took charge only three keels were laid in two weeks versus five expected. Labor is abundant with hundreds of workers available and thousands more potential, but steel delays persist.

Austrians May Strike in the West
