Washington May 7 The War Department announced orders for nine engineer regiments to serve abroad on France communication lines. Each unit about 2000 men boosts total to 18000. They will work on railways roads and telegraph lines and may require minimal training before deployment.
Sixty of the 76 German merchant steamers in Portuguese ports when Portugal entered the war have been rented to Great Britain. England will pay $7,000,000 a year after the war. The move draws criticism amid ship shortages affecting exports and imports and contributing to a coal famine with coal’s price surging to 37 and 40 dollars a ton.
Archibald J. Caldwell of Alton Illinois shot himself at 11 45 last night in a Normandie hotel room. A letter to his mother and a penciled note requesting the letter be sent to his mother were found among torn papers. Caldwell had arrived at the hotel May 3 and used a .38 caliber revolver. the bullet entered the back of the right ear and lodged in the brain. Despondency is blamed for the suicide.
Thomas N. Nickell, a 70 year old Civil War veteran and former Jackson Wyoming city marshal, applied to Governor Houx for service as a sergeant in the national guard. The age limit of 18 to 45 years required denial of his application. Nickell is noted as an Indian wars scout and a hearty, sturdy man.
The State Leader announces a short campaign offering up to three automobiles plus Victrolas Grafonolas electric appliances cameras and gold watches as prizes. Entrants fill a nomination blank, with cash commissions for non winners, and the drive closes July 14.
Washington May 17. House and senate conferees expect to remove the Roosevelt division amendment from the conscription measure. Hardin and Johnson push for Roosevelt to France with an army while opposing factions remain. Conferees settle minor points but stand firm on age and prohibition debates.
In Mexico City 14 000 schoolboys joined a sham battle that ended in several deaths and about 100 injuries during national holiday celebrations for President Carranza. An accident involving ball cartridges with blanks is blamed. A separate House Ways and Means session discussed a new drastic liquor inheritance tax within the war revenue bill.
A well known Iron district ranchman offers 200 acres of fertile irrigated land to any able to farm it in exchange for plowing feeding the land and turning over straw as rent. Governor urges rapid participation as Chicago applicants k interest grows with names forwarded to the council of defense.
An explosion at the Federal Dyestuff and Chemical plant in Kingsport injured two workers and killed one man. The blast shook the area with troops nearby reportedly ground by the shock. Officials gave no cause for the explosion.
In Cheyenne the men defeated William Storey and J T Bell for re election as the High School P T A backed Mrs Rt A Morton and Mrs A K Smith. Storey 443 votes Bell 426 Morton 123 Smith 95. Goble removal sparked student protests and a planned public demonstration, possibly a general student strike unless Goble is heard. The P T A disbanded afterward. The senior class shows split over any demonstration with diplomas at stake.
Senator George E. Chamberlain of Oregon chairs the Senate military affairs committee and has introduced a universal service bill calling up men aged 20 to 23 to form an army of 1.5 to 2 million. The same measure is introduced in the House by Representative Charles P. Caldwell, with Representative Julius Kahn backing a version drawn by the general staff.
Cheyenne women at a patriotic Parish house meeting proposed self marketing to remove delivery and bag costs. Mrs Johnston urged carrying purchases home in market baskets to cut expenses for merchants and households. Other ideas included ending party waste, halting veal calf and lamb slaughter, stopping club refreshments, and dropping the home supply credit system.
Members of the French commission to the United States were severely shaken up but uninjured when their special train returning east from the Midwestern tour derailed near Arcola Illinois. William Nye led the secret service detail and Wade conducted a thorough inspection, deeming the wreck accidental.
Cheyenne residents registered at The Leader office will meet Wednesday night in the high school gym for the citizens training camp replacing tonight’s plan. The program, led by university students and teachers, aims to prepare locals for potential service with military drills and formations under drill masters including Sergeant Moreau and Captain Harry Anderson.
In Washington on May 1 a wave of applications from aliens, including unquestioned citizens of entente powers, seeks permission to join the U S Army. Many wish to serve in national units or legions while remaining loyal to their origin, challenging the War Department’s efforts to assign them.
