Secretary Bryan announced that three South American mediators will meet May 18 at Niagara Falls Canada to receive representatives of the parties to the Mexican controversy. They stated the talks will cover the whole Mexican situation and Carranza may rejoin later.
President Wilson will lead memorial services at the Brooklyn Navy Yard for Marines and bluejackets who died in Vera Cruz. Secretary Daniels and War Secretary Garrison with Admiral Drey will attend. Mayflower and Montana will escort funeral ships to New York Harbor.
Read Admiral Charles J. Badger of Maryland leads the Atlantic fleet during the Mexico crisis after Grant era appointment. He has 24 years at sea and 18 ashore and is noted as sociable, a strict disciplinarian, and a long-time naval officer with ties to the Naval Academy.
The Colorado Republican central committee met in Denver on May 5 and praised Frank C. Goudy for backing the Mexican policy of Wilson and the Ammons law and order program. Dr. Hubert Worll of Pueblo was chosen national committeeman to replace Senator Guggenheim. In Vera Cruz the beautiful office and telegraph quarters were among the first structures captured as American troops advanced on the principal seaport town. The seizure marks an early objective met in the assault on the city and its communications hub.
Mrs. O H Hastings 29 committed suicide by drinking carbolic acid at her residence 1622 O Neill Street yesterday afternoon. Ill health and despair were cited as factors. Husband a Union Pacific brakeman found her semi conscious with a glass in hand. she died at 2 15 p m. Remains at Early's undertaking. funeral later.
A girl matching Catherine Winters was found at C. I. Sigman’s home in Kingston West Virginia near Charleston. Authorities sent a telegram to Dr. Winters asking him to travel to Kingston to identify the girl and confirm her identity.
Madame Lillian Nordica the renowned opera star who has been seriously ill in Batavia for weeks showed a light improvement today in Java May 5.
Constitutionalists at Juarez cite Monterey dispatches saying Saltillo and Tampico are to fall within five weeks. Federals planned to move to San Luis Potosi as Villa’s army nears, while embargoed munitions rush to aid. Carranza orders Caballero to reject any truce at Tampico.
BOOLHS West Virginia May 5 The body of Freeman Lineville an insurance agent from Charleston was recovered from Mine No 5 after the explosion last Tuesday which claimed 172 lives. More bodies were brought up overnight and officials expect the mine to be cleared by nightfall.
President Wilson continues search for head of the Federal Reserve Board after four months of inquiry. Richard Olney, former secretary of state, declined due to age, leaving Secretary of Agriculture Houston as the likely successor with no final choice made yet.
State Fish Commissioner John J. Lenihan announced four million young fish are ready for distribution from Wyomings hatcheries. Half come from the Laramie hatchery and half from Storey near Sheridan. Counties will receive fish on requisition by county commissioners. This is the largest yearly allotment to date.
Burns Wyoming May 6 The school election drew nearly 100 voters as residents backed building nine new country high schools and two additions while delaying high teacher hiring decisions The district would form four long north to south divisions centered on Pine Bluffs Egbert Burns and Hillsdale with a committee to study the plan Directors Ed Jacobson and H D Smith were re elected to terms in Carpenter and Hillsdale.
In Vera Cruz on May 5 a woman accused of killing eight American bluejackets and marines during the early occupation era was captured after a search of her house, which yielded weapons. She faces a military court on murder charges. The report notes vivid American display during the Vera Cruz landing and praises the sailors’ actions in street fighting on April 21.
Secretary John Heydler announces suspensions for two players after arguing with the time pire. Cincinnati manager fined for three game complaint following a dispute in a Pittsburgh game. Brooklyn catcher Alisher also suspended for remarks to umpire Rigler.
Italian born composer of ballet music and masses Paulo Gloraa died at his Seattle home after a long illness. Renowned in musical circles as a friend of Gounod Verdi and Rossini he was over 89 and had taught music in Seattle since 1806 after arriving from San Francisco.
Rear Admiral Frank Friday Fletcher commands the Third Division at Vera Cruz. Highly regarded by naval peers for his international law expertise, calm reserve, and long service with twenty years at sea and twenty years ashore. Born in Iowa, he is 59 years old.
F H Smith assistant superintendent of the Wyoming division was hurt when a speeder jumped the track one mile east of Borie. He and J W Highleyman were thrown from the vehicle. Smith was unconscious with facial and thigh burns a broken ankle while Highleyman was not injured. They were transported to Cheyenne then to St John’s hospital to be treated.
Thirteen survivors of the British steamer Columbian, en route from Antwerp to New York, were rescued by the Cunard liner Franconia after a fire forced abandonment 300 miles south of Cape Race. Chief Steward Matthews' body was found in the lifeboat with survivors recalling a brutal 49 hours at sea.
Mrs. A. W. Crossman wife of a Leader composing room employee underwent an appendectomy at St. John's hospital. She was resting easily at 2 am but remains in grave condition due to surgery delay and post operative complications.
A women’s Democratic club is to be formed in Green River after eight local Democratic women held a committee meeting last Friday. Committees were appointed to arrange the organization, with a meeting planned at the Carnegie Library tomorrow. Mrs. T. S. Taliaferro of Rock Springs will attend to help establish the club and engage members in political issues and participation in upcoming primaries and elections.
